Предлагаемая книжка—„Краткое руководство практической минералогіи“—предназначается какъ руководство для Уральскаго Горнаго училища; она представляетъ собою первую часть сочиненія этого имени—Общую Минералогію. При изложеніи этого предмета я преслѣдовалъ исключительно практическую цѣль—сообщеніе свѣдѣній, какія примѣнимы при опредѣленіи минераловъ простымъ путемъ. Издавая эту книжку, я имѣлъ въ виду не только воспитанниковъ Уральскаго Горнаго училища, но и всѣхъ минералоговъ—любителей, неимѣющихъ спеціализаціи въ этомъ предметѣ. A forerunner of the ATLAS was first published in 1970(1). This early survey comprised 27 zeolite structures known at the time. Then the "Atlas of Zeolite Structure Types" by W.M. Meier and D.H. Olson, with 38 entries, was published by the Structure Commission of the IZA in 1978. This was followed by the much expanded 2nd edition of the ATLAS in 1988 comprising 64 entries, the updated 3rd edition in 1992 with 85 entries, and the fully revised 4th edition in 1996 with 98 entries. This 5th edition is again an updated version of the previous compilation, and the number of entries has risen significantly to 133.

Erfreulicherweise hat die 7. Auflage des Mineralogie-Lehrbuches bei Studenten und Hochschullehrern, aber auch bei interessierten Mineraliensammlern eine positive Aufnahme gefunden und war bereits nach zweieinhalb Jahren vergriffen. Auf Wunsch des Verlages wurde die notwendige Neuauflage nicht nur gründlich überarbeitet, sondern wiederum inhaltlich erweitert und durch zahlreiche neue Abbildungen bereichert. Dabei habe ich mich bemüht, konstruktive Kritik von Rezensenten und Anregungen von Kollegen weitgehend zu berücksichtigen. Äußerst hilfreich waren hierfür Übersichtsartikel, die in den letzten Jahren in Sammelbänden und Zeitschriften zu aktuellen Themen erschienen sind. <...>

Phase transitions in minerals are of interest to a wide spectrum of scientists - geologists, mineralogists, solid state chemists, and physicists. We have now reached the point where mean field theory or Landau Theory of phase transitions as a function of temperature, pressure, or chemical composition can be usefully applied to natural materials, resulting in an improved understanding of the thermodynamics of significant constituents of the earth.

occurring inorganic solid. It has a specific chemical composition and a characteristic crystal structure.
Quartz is a very common mineral. Most beach sand is composed of quartz. It has the composition SiO2

Minerals are intrinsically resistant to the processes that homogenize silicate liquids—their compositions thus yield an archive of volcanic and magmatic processes that are invisible at the whole rock scale. Minerals and their inclusions record diverse magma compositions, the depths and temperatures of magma storage, the nature of open system processes, and the rates at which magmas ascend.

This book arose from a series of lectures given at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford during the Spring of 1966. The lectures were based on material compiled by the author between 1961 and 1965 and submitted in a Ph.D. dissertation to the University of California at Berkeley. At the time crystal field theory had become well established in chemical literature as a successful model for interpreting certain aspects of transition metal chemistry.

The Middle Miocene Orduzu volcanic suite, which is a part of the widespread Neogene Yamadag˘ volcanism of Eastern Anatolia, consists of a rhyolitic lava flow, rhyolitic dykes, a trachyandesitic lava flow and basaltic trachyandesitic dykes. Existence of mafic enclaves and globules in some of the volcanic rocks, and microtextures in phenocrysts indicate that magma mingling and mixing between andesitic and basaltic melts played an important role in the evolution of the volcanic suite. Major and trace element characteristics of the volcanic rocks are similar to those formed in convergent margin settings.
