The engineer’s job is to design and build structures that interact continuously with the soil and subsurface. The goal of this book is to give engineers an academic understanding of earth science and the basics needed to conduct engineering activity appropriate to the various environments that exist on our planet. The objective is to provide:
• The knowledge and ability to analyze the geological processes that create, deform, and weather rocks;
• An understanding of the principal types of rocks and unconsolidated materials and their properties;
• An illustration of how geological conditions affect engineering activities, and how they can simplify or complicate these activities;
• An appreciation of the richness of underground resources and an understanding of how to manage them, geared toward modern engineers seeking sustainable development in an interdisciplinary environment.

This laboratory manual is based on our collective 70-plus years of teaching and coordinating introductory geology courses. Those experiences have helped us understand not only how students best learn geologic principles, but also how to stimulate their engagement with the material to enhance their learning process. Millennium Tower is a 58-story luxury high rise in San Francisco. It cost $350 million to build and contains units that start at $1.6 million and go up to over $10 million. The builders chose to sink support pilings 24 m (80 ft) into bay fill mud and dense sand rather than the 60 m (200 ft) needed to reach bedrock. Since the building was completed in 2009, it has sunk 38 cm (16 in) and is tilting 5 cm (2 in) to the northwest (Matier and Ross 2016). This is not just a concern to the 400 residents. Taxpayers have already spent $58 million building a buttress between the tower and the adjacent Transbay Transit Center that is under construction. The subsidence is not yet considered a safety issue, but residents are concerned.

Meaning and scope of the terms ‘tectonic’ and ‘structure’ The adjective ‘tectonic’ merely means ‘structural’, i.e. applying to a structure. However, in geological usage it has come to be applied particularly to large-scale structures – thus ‘tectonic plate’. In order to explain rock structures, it is necessary to understand the forces operating within and on the crust that are responsible for creating them, and to do this, we need to investigate the Earth-scale processes known collectively as plate tectonics. The term ‘structure’ in everyday usage refers normally to a building or other artificial construction, but in geological terms it has come to mean a body of rock whose shape can be defined geometrically and which has originated by a geological process.
