Two hundred years of mapping and drilling have given us a reasonable model of the continents, and nearly two decades of deep sea drilling have shown at least a cartoon of the oceanic crust. The transition between continent and ocean remains, however, almost unknown, the 'new frontier' of geological exploration. Much current research in earth science is based on applying the plate tectonic model to problems as diverse as continental orogeny, palaeooceanography, and metallogeny.
"Quaternary Glaciations- Extent and Chronology, Part I: Europe '" edited by J~gen Ehlers and Philip Gibbard is the second volume in the Elsevier Book Series on "Developments in Quaternary Science". This book represents the first volume of three covering Quaternary glaciations across the Earth. Part II will cover North America and Part III: South America, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. These books represent the activities of Working Group 5 of the INQUA Commission on Glaciation, which had the mission of bringing together up-to-date information about the extent, volume and timing of Quaternary glaciations. This programme was established at the 1995 INQUA Congress in Berlin and early results were presented to members of the Quaternary community at the INQUA Congresses at Durban in 1999 and Reno in 2003. A brief preview of the work and the background to its development is given in a Viewpoint Article in Quaternary Science Reviews (Ehlers and Gibbard, 2003, Volume 22, Issue 15-17, pp 1561-1568).

This book has been compiled and written by members of the Commission on Geomorphological Survey and Mapping of the International Geographical Union. Originally proposed in 1976 as a text to accompany and explain the lnternationtll Geomorphological Map of Europe (1: 2.5 million), the oudine of the book was prepared by the Commission at a meeting in Nove Mesto, Czechoslovakia, in 1977. Since then, there has been a considerable delay in publishing the International Map; meanwhile, work on this book progressed and has overtaken the schedule for printing the Map. At the same time, the book has been enlarged and its aims have changed to some extent: it is no longer envisaged simply as an explanation of the Map but as a work in its own right, providing the first comprehensive survey of the geomorphology of Europe <...>
Изложены общие вопросы формирования подземных вод субконтинента. Дана характеристика гидродинамической зональности гидрогеологических структур, их геотермических условий, а также газовой обстановки образования химического состава подземных вод. Описаны минеральные и термальные подземные воды. Охарактеризованы ресурсы подземных вод, их режим. Рассмотрено использование подземных вод в различных отраслях народного хозяйства, а также охрана их от загрязнения и истощения. Для гидрогеологов и специалистов смежных с геологией наук.
Дана характеристика физико-географических и геологических факторов формирования подземных вод. Рассмотрены вопросы геолого-тектонического и гидрогеологического районирования субконтинента. Выделены гидрогеологические регионы различных складчатых комплексов: докаледоиских и каледонских, ва-рисских и альпийских. Особое внимание обращается на гидрогеологический регион срединно-атлантического рифтогенеза. Приведены сведения о подземных водах гидрогеологических регионов, областей, районов, массивов, складчатых систем и артезианских бассейнов, в том числе субмаринных. Для научных работников — гидрогеологов и специалистов смежных с геологией наук.
Humans need salt to live. A person eating a diet rich in red meat typically gets all the salt he needs from food, but a person eating only vegetables and grains does not. When people began settling into agricultural communities, they needed salt for themselves and their livestock. Furthermore, vast quantities of salt were needed to preserve food, especially fish.
The 1 : 5 000 000 International Geological Map of Europe and Adjacent Areas (IGME 5000) is a truly multidisciplinary project. It crosses three domains: geology, Information Technology and cartography. Within geology it embraces many sub-disciplines: stratigraphy, petrography, European regional and historical geology and marine geology.
