This issue continues a thematic series on applied geochemistry. The publications will demonstrate various aspects of geochemical studies: geochemical mapping, environmental geochemistry, exploration geochemistry, computer methods in applied geochemistry, geochemistry of continental shelf, and radiogeology.

The second issue of the series covers the problems related to ecological geochemistry.

An intimate coexistence of minerals in close contact with one another, observed repeatedly in definite geologic settings, is called their paragenesis. The paragenesis of minerals may result from different causes. Usually by paragenesis is meant an association of minerals formed simultaneously as products of a certain stage of a given process. Such, for instance, is the paragenesis of minerals formed at the same time by a metamor-phic process and existing in close contact with one another. In this book we have in mind precisely this kind of paragenesis of simultaneously formed minerals. Some authors use the term paragenesis to designate an association of noncontemporaneous minerals, provided there is regularity in their occurrence together. Such, for example, is the paragenesis of primary minerals with the products of their decomposition, or the paragenesis of minerals which crystallize in a regular sequence from a cooling magma or a hydrothermal solution, forming overgrowths on one another. The term paragenesis will not be used here in this broader sense. <...>

The present textbook has been prepared in compliance with the course in mineralogy set by the university curriculum. The first part contains a traditional crystallochemical characterization of minerals. Information on the types of crystalline structure and structural motifs of minerals has been supplemented by a discussion of polymorphic modifications and polytypes. A special section dealing with structural imperfections (defects) has also been introduced. Phenomena pertaining to isomorphism, resolution of solid solutions have received due prominence together with the role of water in the composition of minerals. The graphical representation of the chemical composition of minerals and the calculation of crystallochemical formulae have been illustrated. The description of physical properties is discussed in terms of their nature, the methods of their analysis and the importance for diagnostic purposes, in prospecting, the enrichment of ores, technology, etc. <...>

This book presents a short description of major geological structures in the region and is based on current geological-geochemical and geophysical data and interpretations. New versions of the Geological Map of the Kola Peninsula and some of its structures are given.
The book was written for a wide audience of Russian and foreign geologists and can be used as a geological guide.

The problem of application of geochemical methods in prospecting for metals has become progressively more urgent in recent years. Credit ought to be given to our geophysicists, who were the first to raise this problem and also the first to undertake its solution.

This book is intended for mining engineers and geologists as well as for undergraduate and postgraduate students engaged in the study of mineral deposits.
Since the general conditions of mineral deposits formation and their genetic classification are considered in a special course, the principal problems of the ore formation theory are not discussed in this book. However, some special problems of :he ore formation theory are reviewed while dealing with the mineral deposits of individual metals.

А. N. Zavaritskli's book "Physicochemical Principles of the Petrography of Igneous Rocks" which was published in 1926, was the first systematic textbook on this subject to appear in world literature. It was written in conjunction with a course of lectures delivered by the author over a period of many years (both before and after its publication) at the Leningrad Mining Institute, developing the trend initiated by E. S. Fedorov.
