High-gradel gneisses make up a significant part of the continental crust exposed in orogenic belts and in Precambrian cratons. A lot of research has been focussed on high-grade gneiss terrains because they contain a large proportion of the Earth's mineral wealth. Some of these terrains are considered to represent exhumed segments of the lower continental crust and, as such, give valuable  insight into processes of crustal genesis.

Much near-surface geophysics research and development has occurred since the announcements in early 1988 in GEOPHYSICS and THE LEADING EDGE that Stanley H. Ward was assembling a collection of papers for a new book tentatively titled Environmental Geophysics. The resulting 71 published papers filled three hardbound volumes—Review and Tutorial; Environmental and Groundwater; and Geotechnical.

Metamorphism is broadly a process of solid-state change in the mineralogy, texture and chemistry of rocks in the Earth's crust. It provides a powerful record of change in the Earth's most active settings where metamorphism has proceeded in response to global tectonics.

Heterogeneous ductile shear zones are very common in the Earth’s lithosphere and are particularly well exposed in mountain belts (e.g. Iannace and Vitale 2004; Yonkee 2005; Vitale et al. 2007a,b; Okudaira and Beppu 2008; Alsleben et al. 2008; Sarkarinejad et al. 2010; Kuiper et al. 2011; Dasgupta et al. 2012; Zhang et al. 2013; Samani 2013; Mukherjee 2013, 2014; also see Chapter 9), where they provide useful tools for a better understanding of the processes and parameters controlling strain localization, type of deformation, and rock rheology. The occurrence of strain markers such as fossils, ooids and ellipsoidal clasts in sedimentary rocks, or equant minerals, deflected veins and dykes in igneous rocks, allows one to quantify the finite strain by means of various methods (e.g. Dunnet 1969; Fry 1979; Lisle 1985; Erslev 1988; Vitale and Mazzoli 2005, 2010). <...>

Active tectonics is the study of dynamic tectonic processes that shape the landscape and have an impact on human society. Tectonic geomorphology is the part of active tectonics that is concerned with landforms produced by tectonic processes and the application of geomorphic principles to tectonic problems. Tectonic geomorphology increasingly has become one of the principal tools in a variety of applications, including identification of active faults, formation of geologic structures, seismic-hazard assessment, and the study of landscape evolution. Tectonic geomorphology has proven to be useful in these applications because tectonically produced landforms are created and preserved over time intervals ideal for recording landscape change. <...>
