In China, numerous shallow mined-out areas have been left due to the disordered mining by the private coal mines. It is of important theoretical and practical value for the roof stability evaluation and disaster forecasting to research the deformation rupture, instability mechanism, and failure mode of the rock roof in the minedout areas.

In this introductory chapter we describe general problems of spatial environmental data analysis, modeling, validation and visualization. Many of these problems are considered in detail in the following chapters using geostatistical models, machine learning algorithms (MLA) of neural networks and Support Vector Machines, and the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) approach. The term “mapping” in the book is considered not only as an interpolation in two- or threedimensional geographical space, but in a more general sense of estimating the desired dependencies from empirical data.

The variety of Swiss landscapes is due to the combination of varied structural and climatic contexts and a rich geological heritage. The book is divided in three mainsections. The first section presents the physical context and details the variety of Swiss geomorphological landscapes. The second section proposes 23 examples of Swiss landscapes, in three main subsections: eight examples of structural landscapes; nine cases of glacial, periglacial and high mountain landscapes; and six examples of river landscapes and landscapes related to gravity-driven processes. The geological maps show that Africa is almost entirely made up of basement Precambrian rocks. The only exceptions are constituted by northwestern and southern parts of the continent where narrow Phanerozoic mountains belts are stacked against the Precambrian landmass. Structurally, the Precambrian geology of Africa is grossly divided into cratons and mobile belts (Petters, 1991). The two most important cratons are the West African craton and the Congo (Zaire) craton (Fig. 1 (a,b)). Surrounding the cratons are the belts, which have been deformed or metamorphosed during the Early Palaeozoic Pan-African orogeny. Cratonic nuclei are observed in the central, northeastern and northwestern parts of the Congo (Zaire) craton. According to Cahen (1984), the African orogenic history indicates that the bulk of this craton was stabilised after an early Proterozoic orogeny. The history of the tectonic evolution of Africa is based on a collection of radiometric ages.

Constitutive models are fundamental training for graduate students in geotechnical engineering. For a long time, however, these models have lacked a simple and easy-to-understand platform for learning, training and practice between the theory and practice of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Many engineers and practitioners, and even some researchers, have reservations about this topic. There is a mismatch between research and application. Especially in recent years, constitutive models aiming at refined simulations have been continuously developed, with increasing complexity and parameters. In addition, difficulties in parameter calibration have given rise to barriers to their use in geotechnical engineering. Therefore, the establishment of a simple, easy-to-understand, easy-to-use learning, training and practice platform can serve as a bridge between theory and practice. This book, with its supporting platform software, is a welcome attempt to make constitutive models more accessible to both researchers and practitioners alike. <...>
