The first three editions of this textbook were published in 1979, 1986 and 1992, and I trust that tins new one, necessitated by so many advances both in fact and theory', will retain its function as a course text for students of palaeontology from their second year onwards. 1 have made substantial changes to Chapters 1-3,7, 8 and 12, and the Trace Fossils section has been transferred from Chapter I to die last chapter. AH the other chapters have been revised to a greater or lesser extent. 1 have redrawn about half of the illustrations: a singularly congenial occupation for long winter evenings, and l hope that these will prove of value in helping students to understand the anatomy and terminology of fossil invertebrates.

The concept of longwall mining in the United States dates back to the late 19th century when wide faces were used for coal extraction in the Pittsburgh seam. But modern, fully mechanized longwall mining employing plows and frame supports was first introduced from West Germany in the early 1950s in southern West Virginia. It was used mainly for thin seam mining. During the 1950s and 1960s, the practice did not expand. In fact, due to its poor performance, only a few mines in southern West Virginia employed this technique.

Les couches crélaciques du Portugal sont très riches en Echinidcs. Les espèces se montrent nombreuses et variées, et plusieurs d’entre elles fort abondantes en individus.
Ce sont les travaux et les recherches de la Section des Travaux Géologiques du Portugal qui en ont fait découvrir la plus grande partie, aussi, jusqu’à présent, elles étaient demeurées à peu près inconnues. Forbes cependant, en 1849 *, a décrit neuf espèces d’Echinides du Portugal. Je n ’ai pas pu jusqu’ici les identifier toutes et il en est parmi elles qui sont probablement jurassiques. M. Delgado a bien voulu me proposer d’étudier et de décrire cette faune échinitique  crétacique encore si peu connue. J’ai été fort heureux de pouvoir accepter, et c’est avec une vive satisfaction que j ’ai commencé l’étude des beaux matériaux qui avaient été mis à ma disposition et me promettaient un champ de travail aussi neuf qu’intéressant.
