The main developments during four decades of geostatistical applications on the Witwatersrand-type gold deposits are reviewed and critically compared with a view to highlighting the progress made to date. The basic techniques - from the preliminary borehole valuation of mining properties to the block estimating of ore reserves and foreseeable recoveries are analysed and the prospects for methodological improvements are discussed.

Since October 1975 and the first NATO ASl "Geostat - Roma 1975", there has not been an advanced workshop on geostatistics where experts from throughout the world could meet, teach and debate without the pressure of an ordinary professional conference. This second NATO ASI "Geostat - Tahoe 1983" was intended as a high-level teaching activity yet opened to all new ideas and contributions to the discipline of geostatistics. It was expected that the institute would bridge the gap since "Geostat - Roma 1975" and establish the state of the art of the discipline as of 1983 <...>

Although geologists have used statistical analysis in their research for many years, only recently has geostatistics, as a creative tool in the geosciences, received the attention it deserves. Even now many geologists are unaware of the tremendous power statistical methods offer. Today earth scientists can use summary statistics for large data bases, frequency distributions, sampling designs and problems, and applications of stochastic models and use them in dynamic ways for research and developm·ent.

For the analysis of spatially distributed data, a fundamental aspect is first considered: can the data be interpolated, or are they of such a type that an interpolation between two values measured at different locations makes no sense?

Spatial statistics has developed rapidly during the last 30 years. We have seen an interesting progress both in theoretical developments and in practical studies. Some early applications were in mining, forestry, and hydrology. It seems to be honest to remark that the increasing availability of computer power and skillful computer software has stimulated the ability to solve increasingly complex problems.

In Chapter 4 you looked at plate tectonics and its influence on the climate and habitability of the Earth. In this chapter you will look at a specific aspect of this relationship, namely mountain building. Mountain ranges attract their own microclimates, which tend to be cooler and often wetter than the lowland areas that surround them.

It may strike you as odd that temperatures drop as altitudes increase; after all, the higher the altitude, the closer the Earth’s surface is to the Sun. This is primarily because direct solar radiation causes very little heating of the air; most heating is due to radiation reflected back from the Earth’s surface. Furthermore, air forced to rise by the presence of a mountain will expand and cool in response to the decreasing atmospheric pressure. Eventually, any water vapour in the air will condense. forming clouds and precipitation, which at high altitudes may fall as snow. Even at low latitudes, high mountains may be capped with snow or ice (Figure 5.1). <...>

Монография освещает историю климата России в XI-XVII вв. на основе исследования русских летоnисных источников. Дается оценка климата голоцена, в том числе и климата нынешнего тысячелетия как на Евроnейском континенте, так и на всем северном nолушарии. Подробно nроанализированы необычайные метеорологические явления, наблюдавшиеся с 979 по 1 700 г., на территории от Вислы до Оби и от Черного моря до берегов Северного Ледавитого океана. Данные об экстремальных nриродных явлениях, отмеченных в русских летописях, сведены воедино и составляют заключительную часть монографии. В книге подробно изложена история и закономерности формирования топонимов Командорских островов, выразительно свидетельствующих о процессах их освоения, традициях использования островных ресурсов и культурной самобытности жителей. Исследование базируется на картографических материалах, лингвистических изысканиях, генеалогических таблицах и фольклорных сюжетах. Рассматриваемый период — с момента открытия островов в 1741 г. до настоящих дней.
