The book is concerned with the physical properties, chemical composition, and origin of minerals, and also with the systematic description of the latter. The petrographic sections of the text introduce to the essentials of igneous sedimentary and metamorphic rocks: their composition, occurrence, and origin. The description of minerals and rocks is, where appropriate, supplied with an indication of their practical value and sites-of occurrence.

Ставролит (Fe2+Mg,Zn,Al3+) 2Al2[(Si,Al)O4]4O4[OH]2 является одним из распространенных метаморфических «индекс-минералов» с ограниченным Р-Т полем устойчивости, благодаря чему он стал широко применяться при геологическом картировании метаморфических комплексов, с выделением зон разного уровня метаморфизма еще с конца XIX века (по Barrow, 1893). Закономерное появление ставролита в породах пелитового состава при повышении температуры метаморфизма до ~ 500°С и его исчезновение при ~ 650°С позволяет выделять «ставролитовую зону», соответствующую области низкотемпературной амфиболитовой фации метаморфизма.

В учебном пособии рассматриваются вопросы вещественных, структурных, генетических и прикладных классификаций карбонатных пород, используемые за рубежом и в отечественной геологии, а также изложены характеристики их основных породообразующих минералов и составных компонентов. Для студентов высших учебных заведений, обучающихся по направлению «Геология» и специалистов, интересующихся проблемами изучения карбонатолитов.

Geochemistry is generally considered to be one of the new and burgeoning interdisciplinary scientific fields. The evidence for such a belief is obvious. For example, the Geochemical Society is scarcely out of its swaddling clothes, but it is already a large and important international scientific organization. The very word “geochemistry” was not even included in the ten-volume Oxford Universal English Dictionary published as recently as 1937. During the Second World War and immediately thereafter, however, geochemical work was initiated at scores of universities and commercial laboratories. Thus by 1948 “geochemistry” was well enough established to be defined in The American College Dictionary as “the science dealing with chemical changes in, and the composition of, the earth’s crust.” <...>

In October 1975 a Short Course on Feldspar Mineralogy was held at the Hotel Utah, Salt Lake City, in conjunction with the annual meetings of the Mineralogical Society of America. Richard A. Yund, David B. Stewart, Joseph V. Smith and Paul H. Ribbe presented workshops on x-ray single-crystal and powder diffraction methods and electron optical techniques as applied to the study of feldspars and presented eight lectures, the substance of which became the nine chapters of the first edition of Feldspar Mineralogy. That book was published by the Mineralogical Society as the second volume of its series entitled "Short Course Notes". <...>

When discussing the stability of iron oxides, one must invariably deal with oxygen fugacity as a variable. To many geophysicists the importance of this variable in determining the stability and composition of oxides is not immediately apparent. Indeed, even within the petrologic community there are many misconceptions about what oxygen fugacity is and how it applies to rocks. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the concept of oxygen fugacity so that later discussions within this book that use oxygen fugacity as a variable will be more comprehensible. <...>

Корунд образуется в самых разных геологических обстановках, но при этом достаточно редок, потому что требует обедненной кремнеземом (в противном случае алюминий входит в алюмосиликаты – полевые шпаты, слюды) и насыщенной глинозёмом среды. Согласно современной классификации, выделяются первичные (связанные с магматическими, метаморфическими и метасоматическими породами) и вторичные (связанные с россыпями) месторождения корунда (Giuliani et al., 2020). Среди первичных месторождений корунда наиболее полно изучены магматические (месторождения сапфира в щелочных базальтах, сиенитах, лампрофирах). Модели формирования других типов первичных месторождений – метаморфических и метасоматических – разработаны не столь детально.

This volume was edited by Russell I. Hemley in preparation for a short course by the same title, organized together with Ho-kwang Mao and sponsored by the Mineralogical Society of America, December 4-6, 1998 on the campus of the University of California at Davis. This is number 37 in the Reviews in Mineralogy series, begun in 1974 and continuing with vigor, at least into the near future, with volumes on "Uranium Mineralogy and Geochemistry," on "Sulfate Mineralogy," and on "Natural Zeolites" planned for 1999 and 2000. Volume 36 (1056 pagesl), "Planetary Materials," edited by 1.1. Papike, appeared earlier this year, and it is certainly not unrelated to the subject of this volume on the physics and chemistry of the deep interior of one of the planets. Rus Hemley has highlighted Reviews in Mineralogy Volumes 14, 18, 20 and 29 as particularly relevant to the subject matter of "Ultrahigh-Pressure Mineralogy."
