This chapter describes the difficulties associated with formation evaluation in thinly bedded sandstone reservoirs and outlines the existing technology that has been applied to these difficulties. Chapter 2 introduces our integrated approach to evaluating hydrocarbon pore-thickness in thinly bedded clastic reservoirs.

Objectives:

• This section deals with detailed study of the principles of data warehousing, data mining, and knowledge discovery.

• The availability of very large volumes of such data has created a problem of how to extract useful, task-oriented knowledge.

• The aim of data mining is to extract implicit, previously unknown and potentially useful patterns from data.

• Data warehousing represents an ideal vision of maintaining a central repository of all organizational data.

• Centralization of data is needed to maximize user access and analysis.

There are two aspects of interestingness of rules that have been studied in data mining literature, objective and subjective measures (Liu, 1997; Adomavicius & Tuzhilin, 1997; Silberschatz & Tuzhilin, 1995, 1996). Objective measures are data-driven and domain-independent. Generally, they evaluate the rules based on their quality and similarity between them. Subjective measures, including unexpectedness, novelty and actionability, are user-driven and domain-dependent. A rule is actionable if user can do an action to his/her advantage based on this rule (Liu, 1997).
