Structural geology is obviously one of the more important subjects for geoscientists working in petroleum industry. Folds and faults in deformed rocks make traps for hydrocarbon accumulation. Also, large-scale deformations, the so-called tectonics, control the architecture of petroliferous sedimentary basins. It is the primary job of a structural geologist to interpret geological map and field data, and infer geometry of large scale folds and faults. However, geoscientists with varied specializations and working with different kinds of data may also be called upon to make structural interpretations.

As explained in Preface, this book is a selfcontained member of a broader knowledge system on the world's mineral deposits and their settings I have been developing and experimenting with for more than 40 years. It is a product of global firsthand information gathering in the field and "data mining" from the literature, followed by sorting and organization into interrelated sets searchable and accessible by the rapidly evolving techniques of modern information technology.

Data on the geomagnetic field in the Balkan region and state borders were regarded as confidential information for a long time. Unfortunately this meant that geomagnetic field information was confidential information. The Republic of Macedonia was in a complicated situation because geomagnetic investigations were carried out by experts from Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro. When Macedonia became an independent country, a team of experts from the Faculty of Mining and Geology, Department for Geology and Geophysics in Stip and Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Institute of Physics in Skopje, started activities to establish a Geomagnetic Observatory in Macedonia. In the last four years, with the help of Dr. Jean Rasson from Institut Royal Météorologique, Centre du Physique du Globe in Dourbes, Belgium, a network of 15 repeat stations for measurement of the geomagnetic field in the Republic of Macedonia was created. Studies on the properties and behaviour of clay soils, conducted in Soil Engineering, have revealed the importance of Soil Structure in the control of the properties and response performance of clays. Early descriptions of clay soil structure, in the 1950s–1960s, using such terms as ‘honeycomb’, ‘cardhouse’, ‘flocculated’, ‘dispersed’ and ‘oriented’ testify to the level of descriptive scrutiny of the micromorphology of clay soils.
