Guide to Cavern Engineering / Руководство по строительству в карстовых районах

This Geoguide presents a recommended standard of good practice for the civil engineering aspects of rock cavern developments in Hong Kong. It also serves as a reference document for non-specialists involved in the planning and administration of cavern projects.

Guidelines for analysis and description of soil and regolith thin sections / Руководство по анализу и описанию шлифов грунта и реголита

Precise descriptions of the features seen in soils or regoliths as examined under the microscope require a specific set of concepts and terms because the microscope reveals features that simply cannot be seen with the naked eye. Microscopic features can of course be described using common words, but this would lead to very tedious and lengthy descriptive texts that are time consuming both to write and to read and not always unambiguous. Moreover, it would be difficult to translate such descriptions without losing information or committing errors. By using a comprehensive terminology, descriptions would be not only shorter, but also easier to compare and to store in databases <...>

Guidelines for surveying soil and land resources. Volume 2. Australian sil and land survey handbook series / Руководство по обследованию почв и земельных ресурсов. Том 2. Серия справочников по почвам и землеустройству Австралии

Information on soil and land resources is a prerequisite for informed decisions on land use and management. Procedures for acquiring and using this information are introduced and  emphasis is given to a balanced approach with elements of mapping, modelling and monitoring within the broader context of environmental change. The conceptual basis for a range of approaches to survey is introduced along with an assessment of strengths and weaknesses. A framework for dealing with scale in measurement and prediction is then introduced.

Handbook of geotechnical investigation and design tables / Справочник по таблицам инженерно-геологических исследований и проектирования

There has been very positive feedback from practicing engineers, who need a “go to’’ book, and who have suggested various additions. This encouragement now results in this 2nd edition which uses the similar format of summary data tables and expands the book with additional tables as well as some corrections and additional notes to the tables of the 1st edition.
This book is is principally a data book for the practicing Geotechnical Engineer and Engineering Geologist, which covers:

Handbook of soil analysis. Minerelogical, organic and inorganik methods

This new book by Marc Pansu and Jacques Gautheyrou provides a synopsis of the analytical procedures for the physicochemical analysis of soils. It is written to conform to analytical standards and quality control. It focuses on mineralogical, organic and inorganic analyses, but also describes physical methods when these are a precondition for analysis. It will help a range of different users to choose the most appropriate method for the type of material and the particular problems they have to face. The compiled work is the product of the experience gained by the authors in the laboratories of the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) in France and in tropical countries, and includes an extensive review of the literature. The reference section at the end of each chapter lists source data from pioneer studies right up to current works, such as, proposals for structural models of humic molecules, and itself represents a valuable source of information.

IRD soil scientists collected data on Mediterranean and tropical soils in the field from West and North Africa, Madagascar, Latin America, and South East Asia. Soil materials from these regions are often different from those found in temperate zones. As their analysis brought new problems to light, it was essential to develop powerful and specific physicochemical methods. Physicists, chemists and biologists joined forces with IRD soil scientists to contribute knowledge from their own disciplines thereby widening its scope considerably. This work is the fruit of these experiments as applied to complex systems, involving soils and the environment.

Handbook of soil sciences. Resource management and environmental impacts /Справочник по почвоведению. Управление ресурсами и воздействие на окружающую среду

Handbook of Soil Sciences is the second edition of a comprehensive reference work on the discipline of soil science as practiced today. The new edition has been completely revised and rewritten to reflect the current state of knowledge. It contains definitive descriptions of each major area in the discipline, including its fundamental principles, appropriate methods to measure each property, many examples of the variations in properties in different soils throughout the world, and guidelines for the interpretation of the data for various applications (agricultural, engineering, and environmental).

Hydrogeological Conditions of Submarine Groundwater Discharge in the Crimea

A structural hydrogeological model of the Crimea based on the assumption of the leading role of faults in groundwater distribution is discussed. Areas with intense submarine groundwater discharge are outlined. The existence of water streams related to the faults in the area of the Chernaya River, Mramornaya Gully, Varnautskaya Depression, Batiliman Bay, and Nikitskii Cape is substantiated. The sites for drilling hydrogeo-logical wells are recommended.

Hydrogeology 101. Introduction to groundwater science and engineering / Гидрогеология 101. Введение в науку о подземных водах и инженерное дело

Traditionally, hydrogeology is defined as the area of geologic sciences, as well as engineering, that in its broadest sense deals with water below the land surface. Hydro is the Greek word for water, and geology is the science of Earth: geo being a prefix derived from the Greek word gaia (meaning the earth, but also Gaia – a primordial Earth goddess in Greek myth), whereas logy is derived from the Greek word logos which means word, thought, principle, or speech, but in modern times is most commonly understood to mean science. Thus, geology literally means the science of Earth.

Hydrogeology. Groundwater science and engineering / Гидрогеология. Наука и техника о подземных водах

Groundwater is an invisible but critical component of the hydrologic cycle. It represents the largest source of readily available drinking water on the planet and is therefore an essential resource for humans. Groundwater also provides baseflow to streams and plays a critical role in maintaining the health of freshwater ecosystems. Pressure on groundwater resources is increasing and there is growing evidence that extraction from major aquifers are gradually depleting groundwater reserves worldwide. Predicted climate variability, such as reduced precipitations or increased temperatures, may further exacerbate pressures on groundwater reserves.
