Mineralogy / Минералогия

The present textbook has been prepared in compliance with the course in mineralogy set by the university curriculum. The first part contains a traditional crystallochemical characterization of minerals. Information on the types of crystalline structure and structural motifs of minerals has been supplemented by a discussion of polymorphic modifications and polytypes. A special section dealing with structural imperfections (defects) has also been introduced. Phenomena pertaining to isomorphism, resolution of solid solutions have received due prominence together with the role of water in the composition of minerals. The graphical representation of the chemical composition of minerals and the calculation of crystallochemical formulae have been illustrated. The description of physical properties is discussed in terms of their nature, the methods of their analysis and the importance for diagnostic purposes, in prospecting, the enrichment of ores, technology, etc. <...>

Mineralogy and distribution of platinum-group mineral (PGM) placer deposits of the world / Минералогия и распространение МПГ россыпей в мире

Mineralogical studies of platinum-group minerals (PGM) made during the period 1970-1995 are compiled in this paper for PGM obtained from platinum- and gold-bearing placer deposits of fifteen countries. A total of 3399 quantitative electron microprobe analyses of 37 different PGM are presented, together with analytical data plotted on compositional diagrams. The data reflect the dominance of Pt-Fe alloys (1723 analyses) and Os-Ir-Ru-Pt alloys (976 analyses) in the placers. The platinum-group element (PGE) alloys, as well as some other PGM, generally occur as grains less than one millimetre in size.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of El Dorado epithermal gold deposit, El Sauce district, central-northern Chile / Минералогия и геохимия эпитермального месторождения золота Эльдорадо, район Эль-Соус, центрально-северное Чили

The El Dorado Au-Cu deposit is located in an extensive intra-caldera zone of hydrothermal alteration affecting Upper Cretaceous andesites of the Los Elquinos Formation at La Serena ( 29470 S Lat., 70430 W Long., Chile). Quartz-sulfide veins of economic potential are hosted by N25W and N20E fault structures associated with quartz-illite alteration (þsupergene kaolinite).

Mineralogy and geochemistry of ruby / Минералогия и геохимия рубина

Ruby as a natural gemstone has an early history in which its colorful properties [1] were much valued in ornamental and symbolic jewelry by potentates and other persons of power and prestige [2,3]. This appreciation has extended into latter times and more so into the more general populace. It is an important gem for scientific study [4] and for exploration quests to find new ruby deposits [5,6].

Mineralogy and geology of natural zeolites / Минералогия и геология природных цеолитов

The title of the short course reads "Natural Zeolites"; however, the subject matter treated in the course and reviewed here deals primarily with those zeolites that occur in sedimentary rocks and which have formed by authigenic or burial diagenetic processes. Unfortunately, only limited coverage has been given to the classical occurrences of zeolites--the megascopic crystals in the vugs and cavities of basalts and other basic igneous rocks. Our only justification is that since the late 1950s, almost all major efforts on zeol ites have been directed towards the "sedimentary" occurrences, and it is these occurrences of zeolites in sedimentary rocks that are still unfamiliar to many geologists and mineralogists. It is our intention that this short course and these notes will playa small role in alleviating this unfamiliarity. <...>

Mineralogy for petrologists. Optics, chemistry and occurrence of rock-forming minerals / Минералогия для петрологов. Оптика, химия и проявления породообразующих минералов

The purpose of petrology is to understand the conditions of the formation of rocks. The first stage of this approach is to describe and classify the rocks; that is the subject of petrography. Many characters can be used: density, hardness, colour, structure (on the scale of the outcrop), texture (on the scale of the sample or of the microscope), mineralogical composition, chemical composition, speed of propagation of the waves, etc. Among all the characters, the mineralogical composition is certainly the most important: it allows us to, more or less, accurately foresee the other characters and it can be used to determine the very conditions of the formation of rocks. Indeed, the nature and chemical composition of the minerals in a rock obey stricter laws, since the formation temperature was higher

Mineralogy of Arizona / Минералогия Аризоны

Many new mineral species have been documented in Arizona since the third edition of Mineralogy of Arizona was published in 1995. This new edition adds to the extensive work of the previous authors, who built the foundation on which this new effort rests. This edition is dedicated to these men: John Anthony, Sidney Williams, and Richard Bideaux. The field of mineralogy has undergone many changes since the third edition.

Mineralogy. An introduction to minerals, rocks and mineral deposits / Минералогия. Введение в минералы, горные породы и полезные ископаемые

Literally, “Mineralogy” means science of minerals.

The term “mineral” was coined in the late Middle Ages; it is derived from the Medieval Latin word mina = shaft (minare = to mine). The antique people, e.g., the Greeks and Romans, only used the word “stone”. Special attention was dedicated to precious stones, distinguished by their lustre, colour and hardness, which were highly estimated by the old civilised nations already in pre-Greek times.

Minerals and allied natural resources and their sustainable development. Principles, perspectives with emphasis on the Indian Scenario / Полезные ископаемые и связанные с ними природные ресурсы и их устойчивое развитие. Принципы, перспективы

Minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic, and building stones have played key role in shaping human civilization since ancient times. Demand for and production of these earth resources increased manifold during the Industrial Revolution and both have seen an exponential growth during the last century, keeping pace with growing national and global economies. Ever-widening base of mineral use has made minerals an integral part of our everyday life.

Minerals and rocks / Минералы и горные породы

The solid part of the Earth is made up of rocks. Rocks are made up of minerals. A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic solid. It has a specific chemical composition and a characteristic crystal structure. Quartz is a very common mineral. Most beach sand is composed of quartz. It has the composition SiO2 and forms elongate 6-sided crystals that terminate at a point (Picture 1.1). <...>
