The city of Xi’an, China is privileged to have the honor of hosting the 10th International Symposium on Landslides and Engineered Slopes, following its predecessors: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2004; Cardiff, U.K., 2000; Trondheim, Norway, 1996; Christchurch, New Zealand, 1992; Lausanne, Switzerland, 1988; Toronto, Canada, 1984; New Delhi, India, 1980; Tokyo, Japan, 1977; and Kyoto, Japan, 1972.

This book is a successor to Highway Research Board Special Report 29, Landslides and Engineering Practice (1.8). Special Report 29, which was written by the Highway Research Board Committee on Landslide Investigations and published in 1958, achieved an excellent reputation, both in North America and abroad, as a text on landslides. Because of its popularity, the original printing was sold out within a few years after publication. Since then, there has been a continuing interest in reissuing the original text or publishing a worthwhile successor.
In 1972 the Highway Research Board organized the Task Force for Review of Special Report 29—Landslides. The membership of this task force was selected from several committees within the HRB Soils and Geology Group: its charge was

A series of well-publicized disasters and catastrophes during recent years, including a cyclone in Myanmar, earthquakes in China, Haiti, Chile, and New Zealand, and an earthquake and tsunami in Japan, underscore the importance of efforts to reduce risk from natural hazards around the world. Landslides, floods, drought, wildfire, storms, tsunamis, and earthquakes continue to take a heavy toll in lives and infrastructure. In the past decade, disasters have killed over 750,000 people and caused damage costing hundreds of billions of dollars (Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, 2011).
