The changing Earth. Exploring geology and evolution / Изменяющаяся Земля. Изучение геологии и эволюции

Earth is a dynamic planet that has changed continuously during its 4.6 billion years of existence. The size, shape, and geographic distribution of the continents and ocean basins have changed through time, as have the atmosphere and biota. As scientists and concerned citizens, we have become increasingly aware of how fragile our planet is and, more importantly, how interdependent all of its various systems and subsystems are.

The changing Earth. Rates of geomorphological processes / Меняющаяся Земля. Скорость геоморфологических процессов

An understanding of rates of land surface change has always been a central focus of geomorphological research. Among the questions which require a knowledge of rates of change are the following: How important is climate as a control of geomorphological processes? To what extent are humans influencing landform development? What is the potential useful life time of a particular engineering structure? How can environments be transformed by future global environmental changes? What is the relative significance of different geomorphological processes? How much time is required for a particular landform assemblage to develop? <...>

The Channeled Scabland

As the Mariner and Viking spacecrafts photographed the large channels on Mars, they generated a renewed interest in the erosional effects of large quantities of running water. As the debate continues whether these channels were caused by catastrophic floods, wind, lava or mudflows, it is imperative to examine, in the field, the morphologic criteria which appears to be diagnostic of catastrophic flooding. Hence this field conference to the Channeled Scabland.

The chemical physics of surfaces / Химическая физика поверхностей

There have been two dominant models used in describing the chemical and electronic behavior of a surface. One is the atomistic model, or the “surface molecule” model; the other is the band model, often called for emphasis the “rigid band” model. The atomistic model has been preferred in general in discussions of the chemical processes at a solid surface; the rigid band model is often preferred in discussions of electron exchange between the solid (especially a semiconductor) and a surface group, where, for example, the conductivity of the solid is changed.

The chemistry of crustal brines: tracking their origins / Химия коровых рассолов: отслеживание их происхождения

Brines may be generated in sedimentary, magmatic or metamorphic settings, and they change chemistry extensively as they move through rocks and interact with them. The primary constraint on their metal carrying capacity is their salinity, but they may carry very variable amounts of S in solution, depending on their source and the rocks that they have encountered. Sulphur availability and oxidation state are also major controls on which metals will be transported and which precipitated. Availability of fluid inclusion brine analyses is making possible the characterisation of a much wider range of brine types than was hitherto possible, and providing information about metal contents in a wide range of settings, as well as tracer analyses. Iron contents of brines are broadly temperature dependent, and are much higher in magmatic brines than in sedimentary ones, but basinal fluids may still carry sufficient Fe in solution to precipitate iron oxides at an oxidation front, and may be much more voluminous. Brines of different origins can often be distinguished on the basis of conservative halogen tracers unaffected by wall rock interactions: Br/CI ratios used in conjunction with I/Cl ratios or d"Cl values separate residual bittern fluids from re-dissolved evaporites, with igneous brines forming an intermediate, but somewhat distinct, grouping.

The chemistry of gold extraction / Химия поведения золота

Many of the methods now used for gold extraction are based on techniques that have been known or established for centuries. Gravity concentration, amalgamation, cyanide leaching, chlorination, zinc precipitation, and carbon/charcoal adsorption are all processes that have been used for at least a hundred years, and combinations of these remain as the basis for most gold recovery flowsheets.

The China continental scientific drilling project. CCSD-1 Well drilling engineering and construction / Китайский континентальный проект научного бурения. Проектирование и строительство скважины CCSD-1

The earth is a giant system including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and the mantle, core and planetary space. Earth science is the study on the substance composition, origin, formation, evolution and the interaction of each part of the earth system. In the late 20th century, the earth science developed towards the earth system science, focusing on the lithosphere, and gradually extended to the relationship and interaction with the other layers.

The coal handbook. Towards cleaner production / Справочник по углю. На пути к более чистому производству

There are few places in the developed world where the coal industry does not feel that it faces major challenges. Climate change, safety, and a variety of other environmental issues are just some of the concerns. In many cases, such concerns are justifi ed, and certainly in the developing world much more needs to be done to address them. Equally, the industry is working hard to respond. I know this to be true, after 25 years in the industry working with international organizations such as the World Coal Association and
Coal Industry Advisory Board of the International Energy Agency. These organisations, assisted by regional and other specialist industry bodies, as well as far-sighted coal companies, are all working constructively to improve the performance of the coal industry across a wide front. <...>

The Collector's Guide to Fossil Sharks and Rays From the cretaceous of Texas / Путеводитель коллекционера по ископаемым акулам и скатам из мелового периода Техаса

Among Texas fossil collectors, there is a no more dedicated nor enthusiastic group than the one specializing in the collection of fossilized shark and ray i teeth. Annually, thousands of amateur paleontologists of all ages indulge in this activity for many reasons andat all levels of interest. Forthe persistent collector, teeth are found in abundance at numerous sites where Cretaceous rocks have been exposed through weathering and erosion. Popular collecting localities occurinroadcuts, quarries, creekand river - beds and at temporary exposures associated with construction for housing, highways and industry.

Building a tooth collection can be a great hobby or the beginning of a rewarding scientific endeavor, stimulating your natural curiosity about these fascinating fishes. However, CAUTION is advised. Collecting fossil shark teeth may become an obsession with you like it has for some of us! <...>

The complete encyclopedia of minerals. Description of over 600 minerals from around the world / Полная энциклопедия минералов. Описание более 600 минералов со всего мира

The ever increasing number of publications about minerals reflects a growing interest in nature. Most of those publications though only deal with a few dozen of the most common minerals or gemstones. This book fills the gap by also featuring less common and rare minerals. The authors describe over 600 mineral species and varieties, illustrated with about 750 color photographs. In choosing illustrations of particular minerals, aesthetic criteria such as size of crystal and color played a role in addition to their importance and distribution in nature. This book includes some rare minerals, known only from one locality, because they form very attractive crystals or aggregates. There are minerals known to humankind since prehistoric times such as quartz and gold, but also minerals first described quite recently like rossmanite. The photographs show well-formed and colorful crystals but many-aggregates, which are more common in nature, are also included. The minerals in the book are listed according to the mincralogical system of Hugo Strunz, in his book Mineralogische Tabellen in 1978. The chemical formulae of individual minerals follow the form of Glossary of Mineral Species 1995 by M. Fleischer and J.A. Mandarine The information is complemented in both cases with the latest knowledge from scientific literature, such as new nomenclature of amphiboles, micas and zeolites. The mineral descriptions cover the basic physical and chemical data, including chemical formula and crystal system. The data provided correspond mainly to the end-members. The less common valence of the chemical elements is marked in the chemical formula (FeJ, Mn", As", Mn4", Pb'). Where an element features in both valences in the mineral, they are both marked (e.g. ilvaite, braunite).
