The academic and industrial need for precise age constraints has made stratigraphy a fundamental and rapidly developing earth scientific discipline. Ranging from evolutionary biology, paleontology via climatology to large scale basin analysis, it is stratigraphy that is providing the time frame for the analysis of any dynamic process. Aside from the historically well-established methods, such as lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy, relatively young and novel concepts have started and continue to make their impact on our understanding and the constant refinement of stratigraphy.

This field trip is based on reconnaissance geologic mapping in the Charlottesville 10 X 2 0 quadrangle as part of a new edition of the Geologic Map of Virginia (Figure 1). The first day of the field trip will be spent examining high-rank Grenville-age basement rocks that make up the core of the Blue Ridge anticlinorium. The Aptian to Early Albian Gething Formation comprises a nonmarine to marine sequence of interstratified conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, mudstone and coal, and ranges from 18 m to approximately 1100 m thick. In the Burnt-Sukunka rivers area and part of the Monkman-Stony Lake area, the formation is subdivided into three lithostratigraphic units which, in ascending order, are the Gaylard (new), Bullmoose (new) and Chamberlain (now formally defined and revised) members.
