Volcanic hazards, risks and disasters / Вулканическая опасность, риски и разрушения

General hazards, risks, and disasters: Hazards are processes that produce danger to human life and infrastructure. Risks are the potential or possibilities that something bad will happen because of the hazards. Disasters are that quite unpleasant result of the hazard occurrence that caused destruction of lives and infrastructure. Hazards, risks, and disasters have been coming under increasing strong scientific scrutiny in recent decades as a result of a combination of numerous unfortunate factors, many of which are quite out of control as a result of human actions.

Volcanic lakes / Вулканические озера

Volcanic lakes are amongst the most spectacular natural features on the planet. These intersections of magmatic-hydrothermal systems and the Earth’s surface are, poetically speaking, “blue windows” into the depth of a volcano (Fig. 1). The changing water compositions and colors of these lakes over time provide insights into the volcanic, hydrothermal and degassing processes of the underlying volcano.

Volcanic processes in ore genesis / Вулканические процессы в рудообразовании

Many geologists, particularly those in industry, have commented adversely on the adequacy of university geology courses as a realistic precursor to a vocational career in any branch of the earth sciences other than in the universities themselves. This volume, among other things, is evidence that university staff are concerned about this situation and are introducing the reality, stringency and urgency of industry into areas where, until recently, they have been absent or poorly represented. In this context the study of volcanic processes belongs almost entirely to academics, whereas ore genesis, although a fascinating intellectual subiect, is of prime concern to the mining industry.

Volcanic rocks and soils

Sensitive soils in the Bay of Plenty in North Island occur within weathered, rhyolitic pyroclastic and volcaniclastic deposits, with hydrated halloysite (not allophane) as the principal clay mineral. We evaluate the development of sensitivity and characteristic geomechnical behaviours for sequences of the silt-rich, halloysitic soils.

Volcanic successions. Modern and ancient. A geological approach to processes, products and successions / Вулканические толщи. Современные и древние. Геологический подход к процессам, продуктам и последовательностям

The idea for this book carne into being between 1981 and 1982 when J. V. W. came to Monash University to take up a Monash Postdoctoral Fellowship. During this period a short course on facies analysis in modern and ancient successions was put together, integrating J.V.W.'s extensive volcanological experience in numerous modern volcanic terrains with R.A.F.C.'s extensive sedimentological and volcanological experience in older volcanic and associated sedimentary successions in the Palaeozoic and Precambrian of Australia. The enthusiastic response from the participants to the first short course, taught in May 1982, and to subsequent annual re-runs, encouraged us to develop the short course notes into this book <...>

Volcanic textures. A guide to the interpretation of textures in volcanic rocks / Вулканические текстуры. Руководство по интерпретации текстур вулканических пород

Production of this book has depended on generous financial support from sponsors of the Key Centre for Ore Deposit and Exploration Studies, in particular, the Tasmanian Department of «Mines, Aberfoyle Resources, ВНР Exploration, CRA Exploration, Geopeko, Pancontinental, Pasminco, RGC Exploration and Western Mining Corporation.

Although the material presented comes principally from the collections of J.McP and RLA. we made use of some thin-sections, hand specimens and photographs contributed by colleagues: Stephen Abborr, Guillermo Alvarado. David Cooke. Keith Corbea, Bruce Gemmell. Bruce Houghton, John Waters, Matthew While and Colin Wilson. We are further indebted tо Aberfoyle Resources and Pasminco for usc of many sample from drillcore stores at Hellyer and Rosebery.

Professor Ross large initiated the projecr and provided much appreciated cncouragement throughout irs realisation. The first draft was substantially revised after reviews by Stuart Bull and Ross Large (CODES); Fergus Fitzgerald (Pasminco Exploration), Malcolm Howells (British Geological Survey/, Noel White (ВНР) and Hiromitsu Yamagishi (Geological Survey of Hokkaido).

The production team included June Pongratz (design and desktop publishing), Jcancttc I lankin and Kirst)' Whalcy (typing!- Debbie Flardmg (draughting). Simon Stephens and Naomi Dcards (thin-section and slab preparation). Fred Koolhof (technical advice and some photography) and Alison Jones (final editing).

Volcanic tourist destinations Geoheritage, geoparks and geotourism Conservation and management Series / Вулканические туристические направления Геонаследие, геопарки и геотуризм Серия "Сохранение и управление"

Volcanic landscapes, both active and dormant, and their related features provide priceless natural resources, which are used worldwide as tourist attractions that are popular with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
The preparation for this book has taken rather longer than anticipated but combining the collective information was a complex task. The delay, however, turned into a blessing, as in the meantime several more volcanic areas acquired protected site status, either as inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list or as members of the growing geopark associations such as the European Geopark Network, the Japanese Geopark Network and the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. <...>

Volcanism and evolution of the African lithosphere / Вулканизм и эволюция Африканской литосферы

The distribution of volcanism in the African plate refl ects a variety of processes, many of which are poorly understood, involving interaction between the lithosphere and the underlying convective mantle. Despite the maturity of the plate tectonic paradigm, our knowledge of the processes involved in the breakup of continents and the formation of new ocean basins remains limited.

Volcanism and the Earth's Atmosphere / Вулканизм и атмосфера Земли

Volcanic activity can have a profound effect on the Earth's atmosphere and environment across many spatial and temporal scales. From being the source of most gases in the atmosphere over geologic time scales, to producing climate change, to threatening aviation, volcanic eruptions as well as non-eruptive volcanic gas and particle emissions provide a strong link between the lithosphere and the impact of the atmosphere on human activities.
