In 2003, mine production of recoverable copper in the United States fell by about 26,000 metric tons (t) to the lowest level since 1985.

The assessment of porphyry copper deposits in eastern Asia has a long history, and many people have been involved. USGS colleagues Klaus J. Schulz and Joseph A. Briskey initiated the project and participated in the first workshop, in Kunming, Yunnan, in 2002. Stephen G. Peters and Warren Nokleberg coordinated and led the initial assessment activities, prepared preliminary reports, and represented the USGS to our Chinese counterparts at several meetings.

Porphyry-related metal deposits are large-tonnage, generally low-grade, hydrothermal deposits related to igneous intrusions emplaced at high crustal levels. Mineralization may be confined to pluton-hosted disseminations, stockworks, vein sets, and breccias and (or) occur in skarns, replacements, veins, and disseminated deposits peripheral to the inferred source pluton. Coeval epithermal precious metal-dominated deposits may occur above, or be telescoped onto, porphyry systems. This spectrum of deposit types includes many of the world's largest accumulations of Cu, Mo, Au, Ag, Sn, and W. As such the deposits represent critical economic resources and important exploration targets (Gilmour et al., 1995; Kirkham and Sinclair, 1996; Singer, 1995).

The Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold porphyry deposits arc located 6S0 kilometres south of Ulaan Baa tar in the south Gobi region of Mongolia. Copper mineralisation was first discovered in the Bronze age. During the late 1990’s extensive exploration including drilling was conducted by ВНР.

Gold-bearing quartz reefs commonly show extremely erratic and unpredictable grade variation, although gross geological continuity may be good. This type of variation is often described as being nuggety or having a high nugget effect and can be measured quantitatively using the semivariogram. Understanding of geological features such as reef texture and structure will provide improved models for the interpretation of assay data, drill core descriptions, etc.
