International Kimberlite Conference in Cape Town is full y justifie d by the fact that South Afric a and Bostwana together provide more than 38% of the present world production of diamond. With considerably smaller resources, the United States of America could (i n 1977) present new observations on diamond-bearing kimberlites recently discovered in the Colorado-Wyoming area, and so Santa Fe situated near these kimberlite localities , and even closer to the classica l lamproites field s of New Mexico, Arizona and Utah was a reasonable choice fo r the 2nd. meeting. Certainl y the next meeting scheduled fo r 1986 in Perth (Australia ) wil l also demonstrate new localities , as well as give the opportunity to visi t the firs t diamond-bearing lamproites ever discovered. <...>

The Arkansas bauxite region lies near the center of the State in Pulaski and Saline Counties. It is irregular in outline, covering about 275 square miles and is elongate in a northeasterly direction. Bauxite deposits in the region can be grouped into two principal districts, one in Pulaski County about 5 miles south of Little Rock, and the other, more important commercially, about 25 miles southwest in Saline County.

This study is the second and final part of a Geoscience BC funded project (Project 2009-19) carried out by the author to test the effectiveness of a variety of commonly used chemical extractions at detecting mineralization through thick Quaternary glaciofluvial cover. In the first part carried out at the Kwanika Central Zone (Heberlein and Samson, 2010), results showed that conventional soil sampling (an aqua regia digestion of -80 mesh screened, upper B horizon) is ineffective at detecting the buried mineralization. Furthermore, laboratory specific extractions like MMI-M (SGS) and Ionic Leach (ALS-Chemex), Enzyme Leach and Bioleach (Actlabs) also performed poorly.

The term Theory of Sampling (TOS) is attributable to Kim Esbensen who coined the term in his tribute to Pierre Gy “50 years of Pierre Gy’s ‘Theory of Sampling’-WCSB1”: A tribute” that appeared in the in the Proceedings of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) (Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems 74), in 2004, that was dedicated to Pierre Gy’s special contribution to science and the advancement of knowledge.

This paper reviews the available information on the geology, mineralogy, and resources of the significant rare earth element (REE) deposits and occurrences in the Murmansk Region, northwest Russia. The region has one of the largest endowments of REE in the world, primarily the light REE (LREE); however, most of the deposits are of potential economic interest for the REE, only as by-products of other mining activity, because of the relatively low REE grade.
