‘Orebody modelling and strategic mine planning’ are arguably the backbone of our industry and represent an intricate, complex and critically important part of mining ventures. They have a profound effect on the value of a mine, as well as determining the technical plan to be followed from mine development to mine closure. It is most gratifying to introduce the second revised edition of this Spectrum Series volume on the above topic, following the depletion of all copies of the first edition within about a year of its publication.

In 1949 a large bastn8site deposit was discovered at Mountain Pass, Cal if. Subsequent development of the deposit made the Uni ted States the worl d's largest source of rare-earth minerals. Since 1965, bastnisi te, a f luocarbonate of the cerium-group metals, REFC03, has replaced monazite as the principal source of rare earths; in 1978 it accounted for more than ha l f of the world production (§_).3 Rare-earth a lloys and compounds are used in petroleum crac.kin.g catalysts, ductile iron and high-strength, lo..,..alloy (HSLA) steel production, high- energy pertn4lnent magnets, color tel evi si on pi cture tubes, glass polishing and decolorizing, and ceramics. <...>
In recent years, alkaline rocks have started to attract intensive attention in both academic and practical fields. These rocks are distinguished mostly by the abundance of alkaline minerals they contain rather than their other components. They generally represent magmatic rocks which contain sodium pyroxene, sodium amphibole or feldspathoid.
Giant (and super-giant) metallic deposits are defined as those that store the trace metal (and some major metal like Fe, Al) equivalent in 1011 (1012) tons of continental crust in Clarke (mean crust content) concentration. Deposits of metallic ores that have very contrasting Clarke values (like Fe, Cu and Au) can be compared on geochemical basis, with political-economic and technologic factors minimized. Under these terms, there are now 1171 giant and 137 supergiant accumulations of 37 metals worldwide, contained in 915 deposits, as several deposits have two or more giant metal accumulations (Olympic Dam has 5).
This book is an outgrowth of my interest in the chemistry of sedimentary rocks. In teaching geochemistry, I realized that the best examples for many chemical processes are drawn from the study of ore deposits. Consequently, we initiated a course at The University of Cincinnati entitled "Sedimentary Ore Deposits," which serves as the final quarter course for both our sedimentary petrology and our ore deposits sequence, and this book is based on that teaching experience. Because of my orientation, the treatment given is perhaps more sedimentological than is usually found in books on ore deposits, but I hope that this proves to be an advantage. It will also be obvious that I have drawn heavily on the ideas and techniques of Robert Garrels.
Economics, and the economic way of thinking, have had an important influence on business and government affairs for at least the last two centuries. The Scottish author Adam Smith espoused the foundations of modern economic thought in 1776 (Smith, 1976 [1776]). His famous volume – The Wealth of Nations1 – ushered in a revolution in economic thinking. His ideas formed the basis of the new academic field of political economy, which writers such as William Stanley Jevons renamed as economics some 100 years later.
