An alternative model for the growth of faults

Conventional growth models suggest that faults become larger due to systematic increases in both maximum displacement and length. We propose an alternative growth model where fault lengths are near-constant from an early stage and growth is achieved mainly by increase in cumulative displacement. The model reconciles the scaling properties of faults and earthquakes and predicts a progressive increase in fault displacement to length ratios as a fault system matures. This growth scheme is directly applicable to reactivated fault systems in which fault lengths were inherited from underlying structure and established rapidly; the model may also apply to some non-reactivated fault systems. Near-constant fault lengths during subsequent growth are attributed to retardation of lateral propagation by interaction between fault tips. The model is validated using kinematic constraints from growth strata, which are displaced by a system of reactivated normal faults in the Timor Sea, NW Australia.

From geometry to dynamics of microstructure: using boundary lengths to quantify boundary misorientations and anisotropy

The microstructure of a quartzite experimentally deformed and partially recrystallised at 900 °C, 1.2 GPa confining pressure and strain rate 10~ /s was investigated using orientation contrast and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Boundaries between misoriented domains (grains or subgrains) were determined by image analysis of orientation contrast images. In each domain, EBSD measurements gave the complete quartz lattice orientation and enabled calculation of misorientation angles across every domain boundary. Results are analysed in terms of the boundary density, which for any range of misorientations is the boundary length for that range divided by image area. This allows a more direct comparison of misorientation statistics between different parts of a sample than does a treatment in terms of boundary number.

UHT sapphirine granulite metamorphism at 1.93-1.92 Ga caused by gabbronorite intrusions: Implications for tectonic evolution of the northern margin of the North China Craton

Sapphirine granulites occur in the Daqingshan and Jining areas in the Palaeoproterozoic Khondalite belt, which divides the Western Block of the North China Craton into the Yinshan block to the north and the Ordos block to the south. The sapphirine granulites in the Daqingshan area are always in contact with meta-gabbronorite dykes, implying a causal relationship. The sapphirine-bearing rocks are divided into spinel-garnet-sillimanite-biotite-plagioclase-sapphirine gneiss, UHT sapphirine granulite, and spinel-garnet granulite. The sapphirine granulite contains up to 30% sapphirine, garnet (30-50%), spinel (5-15%), sillimanite (5-15%), biotite (10-20%) and plagioclase (10-20%) with minor cordierite, rutile and ilmenite, but without quartz and orthopyroxene. Bulk chemical compositions show that the sapphirine granulites have very low SiO2 contents (39wt.%), high Al contents, and low XMg. Biotite contains very high TiO2 contents up to 7.6wt.%. Detailed petrographic examination of the sapphirine granulites reveals five mineral assemblages (M0-M4): (1) an assemblage (M0) of mineral inclusions within garnet cores, (2) a matrix (peak) assemblage (M1) represented by coarse-grained garnet, sapphirine, spinel, sillimanite, biotite and plagioclase, (3) sapphirine + plagioclase symplectite (M2), (4) spinel + plagioclase symplectite (M3), and (5) retrogressive biotite (M4). The P-T stability field in the pseudosection of the NCKFMASH system indicates that the temperature of the peak UHT metamorphism of the Daqingshan sapphirine granulites is in the range 910-980 ° C (this compares with the peak regional metamorphic temperature of the khondalites of 700-820 ° C). The P-T path inferred from the P-T stability fields of the mineral assemblages (M1 -M4) suggests that the peak UHT metamorphism (M1) was followed by nearly isothermal decompression (M2 and M3) and later cooling (M4). Field relations and geochrono-logical data suggest that the high-heat flow necessary for the UHT metamorphism of the sapphirine granulites from the Daqingshan area was provided by coeval ~1.93-1.92 Ga gabbronorite intrusions that were most probably generated by ridge subduction, which was also responsible for abundant garnet-rich granites by crust melting the area.

Readsorption of gold during selective extraction — observations and potential solutions

This paper describes a soil extraction method developed to investigate the different chemistries of Au in various soils in the Yilgarn Craton. The extraction solution is 1 M sodium bicarbonater0.1 M potassium iodide, saturated with CO2 and adjusted to pH 7.4 with hydrochloric acid. A soil : solution ratio of 1 : 2 Žg : ml. is used. Two different methods were used: Ž1. net iodide-extractable Au, with solutions analysed directly for Au; Ž2. gross iodide-soluble Au, where activated carbon is added to the mixture and the carbon analysed at the end of the extraction, thus providing a measure of all Au dissolved during the extraction Žincluding that readsorbed during the net extraction.. Depending on the extraction conditions, there may be appreciable readsorption of Au, particularly for organic-rich ŽG50%. and Fe-rich lateritic soils Ž)80%.. This readsorption is enhanced by pulverizing to -75 mm. Consequently, for simple extractions longer than 1 day, pulverized soils give lower apparent Au solubility than do unpulverized soils. Unpulverized carbonate-rich soils show high Au solubilities and little Žoften -20%. readsorption, and consequently show high net iodide-solubilities. These readsorption phenomena could affect other methods used in exploration and should be thoroughly investigated before incorrect conclusions are drawn. The readsorption problems are removed by adding activated carbon to the extraction mixtures; the carbon adsorbs Au as it is dissolved from the sample and is subsequently analysed. However, different soil types still show distinctly different Au solubilities, which should be recognized for interpretation of extraction results. Again, this effect should be tested for other extraction techniques. A more intractable problem may be that biological cycling of the Au through plants and other organisms appears to cause high Au solubilities in many soils. This effect may obscure any potential ‘mineralization signature’ that is being tested by selective extractions, and could cause problems for any extraction method, no matter how well designed

Thickness and spatial distributions of clastic dykes, northwest Sacramento Valley, California / Мощность и пространственное распределение кластических даек, северо-запад Сакраменто Вэлли, Калифорния

The geometry and distribution of the clastic dv s.es of the Ono district. North Sacramento Valley are examined within stream sections. Five traverses along dry stream beds provide good exposure allowing the spacing, thickness and geometry of the dykes to be reorded. The spatial and thickness distribution of the dykes are considered using cumulative frequency plots, allowing a visual estimation of a best lit distribution. Dyke thickness conforms best to a log-normal distribution. There is also a characteristic minimum dyke thickness in a traverse and this is attributed lo the minimum aperture thai a fluid with sand clasts is able to exploit. Dyke spacing, however, shows a good correlation with a power-law distribution for four traverses, suggesting thai there is a mechanistic control on the spatial dislribulion. Plolting dyke thickness against minimum dyke spacing reveals that thin dykes do not generally intrude in isolation. I'nlike veins and igneous dykes, elastic dykes continue lo provide preferential pathways for fluid flow, subsequent lo their intrusion, thus inhibiting intrusion in the area surrounding a pre-existing dyke. Acombination of this process and dyke branching provides the best model for the observed spatial and thickness distribution of clastic dykes seen in the Ono district. California.

Geologic structures

"Geologic Structures" presents the facts of the architecture of the earth and explains the action of the forces which have produced that structure. In this, the third edition, the statement of pertinent mechanical principles precedes description, and description of each type of structure, such as folds, faults, etc., precedes the analysis of the stresses and strains involved in the particular change of form.

Elements of mineralogy. Emphasizing the variations in minerals / Элементы минералогии. Подчеркивая различия в минералах

One purpose of this book is to advance the idea that many minerals are not fixed and simple in composition. Some years ago Professor D. Jerome Fisher of the University of Chicago pointed out that the writer's Elements of Optical Mineralogy had made such a treatment available to advanced students for some years, but that no elementary textbook, in any language, presented the subject in a similar way. A result of Dr. Fisher's suggestion has been the preparation of this volume.

This dynamic Earth: the story of plate tectonic / Эта динамичная Земля: история тектонических плит

In the early 1960s, the emergence of the theory of plate tectonics started a revolution in the earth sciences. Since then, scientists have verified and refined this theory, and now have a much better understanding of how our planet has been shaped by plate-tectonic processes. We now know that, directly or indirectly, plate tectonics influences nearly all geologic processes, past and present. Indeed, the notion that the entire Earth's surface is continually shifting has profoundly changed the way we view our world.
