This revised handbook addresses mine closure, one of the themes in the Leading Practice Sustainable Development (LPSD) Program. The program aims to identify key issues affecting sustainable development in the mining industry and provide information and case studies that illustrate a sustainable basis for the industry. A number of other themed handbooks in the series complement this handbook. The leading practice handbooks integrate all phases of mineral production, from exploration to post-closure and relinquishment.

It is with great pleasure that I endorse Crimes Against Mine Planning by Mark Bowater. This book seeks to “call out” examples and themes of poor mine planning and mine management practices that have plagued many of us during our careers in mining.
The mining industry plays a very important role in the Australian economy, with billions of dollars of capital deployed, earning even more billions of dollars of tax and royalty generating revenue. Efficient allocation and use of capital and labour is at the heart of a successful mining operation and good quality mine planning is the key to unlocking the inherent value of an orebody by efficiently planning and scheduling the use of that capital and labour.

In history, before miners had access to productive equipment  and blasting agents, mining was hard and hazardous manual work. The idea of excavating large volumes of rock to access even the richest mineral zones was not feasible, and, as a result, ore veins were selectively followed, predominantly close to the surface, or inside mountains. During the past century, introduction of diesel power and electricity, combined with new methods of mineral dressing, paved the way for large scale open pit mining, and later for mechanized underground mining. Nevertheless, the largest quantities of ore are still excavated from surface deposits.

This book started with a desire to understand how to answer an apparently simple but actually complex question faced by all those responsible for the development and operation of mines: How do we determine which cut-off grade should be used to separate material that should be processed from that which should be sent to the waste dump? The answer appears straightforward: If it is profitable to process one metric ton of material, this ton should be processed. But what is profitable? The cut-off grade has a direct bearing on the tonnage of material mined, the tonnage and average grade of material processed, the size of the mining operation, and consequently capital costs, operating costs, environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Should we maximize cash flow, net present value, the life of the mining operation, the return to shareholders? How do we take into account economic, environmental, social, political, ethical and moral values, objectives, and regulations? <...>

This chapter will present the origins of pore pressure and principles its determination. It  should be emphasized here that this subject alone requires more than one book to cover in detail.
Hence the emphasis will be placed on the practical utilisation of pore pressure in the well planning process. It is hoped that the ideas presented here will help the engineer to better understand lithological columns and deduce potential hole problems before producing a final well plan.

В работе рассматриваются математические модели динамики формирования магматических очагов, интрудирования магм и становления плутонов в камере, а также динамики гидротермальных процессов, сопровождающих магматизм: метасоматоза и рудообразования. Приводятся оригинальные результаты по экспериментальному исследованию кинетики и динамики минералообразования. Обсуждаются следствия из аналитических моделей рудообразования, касающиеся зональности минерализации в некоторых характерных метасоматических и жильных месторождениях.

В книге впервые обобщен материал по медному оруденению главных меденосных районов Мугоджар (южного продолжения Урала)—Зеленокаменной, Сакмарской и Иргизской структурно-формационных зон. Основным содержанием работы является описание большого количества месторождений и рудопроявлений меди, сопровождаемое графическими иллюстрациями.

Широкое применение методов геохимических поисков на всех этапах геологической службы ставит перед необходимостью развития теоретических основ этих поисков, а также обобщения того большого материала, который накоплен практикой геолого-разведочных, геолого-поисковых и геофизических партий.
