Land forms and drainage patterns are being studied by more and more elaborate methods all the time. The increasingly accurate methods of measuring land form and geomorphological processes are providing a vast amount of quantitative data. This has to be analysed by numerical methods so that an orderly behaviour may be discerned from amongst the mass of accumulated data. This book sets out to provide an introduction to those numerical methods which we have found to be most useful in the analysis of geomorphological data.
For several years while teaching iri academia or in the industry we have recognized a need for a comprehensive and relatively advanced textbook iri petroleum production engineering. Currently available texts and monographs failed to provide sufficient scope and depth to be suitable for engineering education. We wanted to develop a petroleum engineering textbook at the level of analogous publications in other engineering disciplines, intended to offer terminal exposure to senior undergraduates or an introduction to graduate students.
In the fall of 1988 the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) held a forum on reservoir characterization in Grindenwald, Switzerland. Many of the authors who have contributed to this volume were at that forum discussing their ideas on stochastic methods for reservoir characterization. All of these ideas were then still quite new and largely untested; indeed, some of them had not been reduced to practice, but were merely the wild imaginings of creative and curious minds. At that time, there was still a fair bit of controversy over whether stochastic methods had any relevance to the practice of modeling petroleum reservoirs.*
Applied Mineral Inventory Estimation presents a comprehensive applied approach to the estimation of mineral resources/reserves with particular emphasis on
The geological basis of such estimations
The need for and maintenance of a high-quality assay data base
The practical use of a comprehensive exploratory data evaluation
The importance of a comprehensive geostatistical approach to the estimation methodology.
Environmental Geology is a new textbook that focuses on the fascinating interaction between humans and the geologic processes that shape Earth’s environment. Because this text emphasizes how human survival is highly dependent on the natural environment, students should fi nd the topics to be quite relevant to their own lives, and therefore, more interesting. One of the key themes of this textbook centers on a serious challenge facing modern society: the need to continue obtaining large quantities of energy, and at the same time, move from fossil fuels to clean sources of energy that do not impact the climate system. Environmental Geology provides extensive coverage of the problems associated with our conventional fossil fuel supplies (Chapter 13), and an equally in-depth discussion on alternative energy sources (Chapter 14). The two chapters on energy are then intimately linked to a comprehensive overview of global climate change (Chapter 16), which is arguably civilization’s most critical environmental challenge<...>
