Have you tried to walk across a farmer’s field in Montmorillon in France on a rainy October day? Marcel and Bertrand, his father, tried to do so in the fall of 1881 with fatal consequences. We will return to this terrible true story in the first chapter of this book for explaining how the soil at this place made it happen, continuing throughout the rest of the book by explaining how the dreadful soil, in fact, also has extremely beneficial properties in other contexts, like isolation of very hazardous waste.

Soils consist of solid particles, enclosing voids or pores. The voids may be filled with air or water or both. These three soil states (or phases) can be visualized by the enlargement of three small samples of soil.

В книге приведены сведения о комплексе свойств горных пород и углей глубоких горизонтов Кузбасса, полученных при изучении Прокопьевско-Киселевского месторождения. Основное внимание уделено прочностным и деформационным параметрам в связи с проблемой освоения больших глубин н необходимостью оценки поведения пород в различных горно-геологических условиях. В работе приводятся сведения о инженерно-геологических условиях формирования прочности, деформируемости и ползучести горных пород и углей. Предлагается комплексная оценка свойств пород на основе вдавливания плоского штампа, обосновываются теоретические и физические возможности метода. Анализ обширного экспериментального материала ведется на основе расчленения пород по основным структурам; рассматривается возможность использования физико-механических свойств пород при оцшіке горно-геологических явлений.

Laboratory data are critical to the understanding of the properties and genesis of a single pedon, as well as to the understanding of fundamental soil relationships based on many observations of a large number of soils. The development of laboratory methods, the analytical database, and the soil relationships based on those data are the cumulative effort of several generations of scientists.

​Political geology was created to bring together geology and politics in new ways. It developed largely within a mgeographers and was, in part, inspired by discussions surrounding the Anthropocene. But political geology also resonated with conversations across the humanities with shared interests in the social life of geology and the geology of social life. Political geology attempted to extend those interests by foregrounding the geos in the geopolitical at the very moment when many contemporary geopolitical analyses had forgotten that the geos of politics was actual material: grounded geological processes.
