This proceedings contain 150 papers accepted for The 3rd ISRM Young Scholars’ Symposium on Rock Mechanics, which was hold in November 8–10th, 2014, Xi’an, China. The Symposium is organized by the Commission on Education of International Society for Rock Mechanics and Xi’an University of Science and Technology, and sponsored by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME).

The responses of rocks to dynamic loading under multiaxial in-situ stress state are of vital significance to many engineering applications such as rock drilling and blasting. In this study, a full-scale three-dimensional (3D) numerical testing system of the triaxial Hopkinson bar is established based on com-bined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) to investigate the dynamic responses of rocks under combined multiaxial static and dynamic loading conditions.

Coal is an important part of natural resources and the focus of social energy and economic development. With the increase in the energy demand, the amount of coal mining is also increasing, which leads to many safety problems. Improving the elevels of safety in the coal mining process while ensuring that coal production is carried out at an acceptable level is a problem that we must attach great importance to. In this book, we collect, revise and collate the latest work of the main researchers, covering the theory and technology of coal mine disaster prevention and control, safety management and control in the process of coal mining, mineral processing and intelligent/ green mining engineering, mining environmental protection and sustainable development, and other aspects of safety technology research, focusing on coal mine production safety <...>

The International Young Scholars’ Symposium on Rock Mechanics 2008 has been organized by the ISRM Commission on Education and supported by the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) and Chongqing University (CU), under the sponsorship of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME).

It is customary to analyze the behavior of foundations under the implicit assumption that the ground will suffer deformations and settle as a result of the increasing load transmitted by a construction in progress. Usually an estimation has to be made of the final movements to be expected in the construction (whether a building or a public work) in the short or in the long term.

Water is among the most essential resources that sustain Earth’s ecosystems, but these systems are currently under threat due to land use and climate change. Assessing the impact of this global change on water security and ecosystem’s functions is not only the key concern of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, playing a key role in sustainable development of society, but also the most important research focus in “Future Earth” and Earth critical zone research.
