The Red Sea-Gulf of Aden is an active maritime rift system which is unique in the world. Interest in rifts is considerable because they are vital in terms of understanding the fundamental mechanisms of plate movements and their related seismicity, and because the sedimentary basins which result can be important in terms of hydrocarbon and metalliferous potential. Furthermore, the Red Sea-Gulf of Aden rift system covers about 200 of latitude and therefore is also a favourable site for the study of past climatic changes through a particularly rich sedimentary record.

Worldwide the majority of water bodies (rivers, reservoirs and lakes) are no longer in a natural morphodynamic status due to anthropogenic interventions in the catchment area as well as in the river itself. Alterations in the catchment, e.g. uprooting, may lead to high sediment intrusions in river systems even during relatively short precipitation events. The effect of high suspended load concentration and the intrusion of fine sediments (clogging) result in a reduction of habitat quality for many aquatic species. Furthermore, the low water quality can negatively affect both macroinvertebrates as well as microbial organisms on the sediment bed due to increased turbidity as well as sediment smothering that alter the light climate and oxygen penetration, respectively.

В сборнике собраны статьи по различным аспектам геологии и полезным ископаемым Большого Кавказа: до мезозойского ядра, альпийского комплекса, магматизма и проблем складчатости. Особое внимание уделяется обсуждению новых идей в применении к геологии Большого Казказа. Обсуждаются проблемы геологии альпийского структурного этажа, в частности стратиграфия юрских, меловых и антропогеновых отложений, геосин кл и нал ьный и орогенный магматизм. Рассматривается происхождение альпийской складчатости и неотектонической структуры Большого Кавказа с учетом геодинамических и палеотектонических реконструкций.
