Originally, this book was the first attempt to synthesize knowledge on the theory, methods, and applications of digital terrain analysis in the context of multiscale problems in soil science and geology. The content of this book is based on the author’s long-standing, interdisciplinary research. Since the preparation of the first edition in 2010–11, considerable progress has been made in digital terrain modeling.

The history of life is documented by fossils through the past 3.5 billion years. Paleobiology provides a unique long‐term perspective, which is important for three reasons: ancient life and environments can inform us about global change and the origins of modern biodiversity, and so provide information about how the world might change in the future; extinct plants and animals make up 99% of all species that ever lived, and so we need to know about them to understand the true scope of the tree of life; and extinct organisms did amazing things that no living plant or animal can do, and we need to explore their capabilities to assess the limits of form and function <...>

Данное пособие является актуализированным переизданием пособия «Номенклатуры и структуры изверженных пород» 2007 г. В 2009 году был обновлён «Петрографический кодекс», основные положения и рекомендации которого взяты за основу курса «Петрография изверженных пород» на геолого-геофизическом факультете НГУ. Сам кодекс является библиографической редкостью, что затрудняет его использование в учебных целях, и это побудило авторов подготовить данное пособие.

The geological guidebook that follows has been prepared for the occasion of the 80th Annual Meeting of The Meteoritical Society in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a Society field trip to the crater. The guidebook is an expanded version of the first edition, which was prepared for the 70th Annual Meeting of The Meteoritical Society in Tucson, Arizona. While both guidebooks provide a trail-oriented geological tour of the crater, they are also designed to introduce readers to the geological processes that shaped the crater.
