The term rare earths denotes the group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements that includes scandium, yttrium, and the lanthanides (Spedding 1978; Connelly et al. 2005). The lanthanides are the series of elements with atomic numbers 57 to 71, all of which, except promethium, occur in nature. The rare-earth elements, being chemically similar to one another, invariably occur together in minerals and behave as a single chemical entity. Thus, the discovery of the rare earths themselves occurred over a period of nearly 160 years, from 1787 to 1941 (Szabadvary 1988; Weeks 1956).

There has been very positive feedback from practicing engineers, who need a “go to’’ book, and who have suggested various additions. Like other construction materials, soil possesses mechanical properties related to strength, compressibility, and permeability. Fractures are a universal element in sedimentary rock layers, so much that they are virtually omnipresent in outcrops of sedimentary rocks. Think of all the outcrops of sedimentary rocks that you have ever seen and try to recall a layer that was completely unfractured, with the possible exception of extremely ductile rock, such as salt or certain shales, you will not be able to recall any unfractured rocks simply because they do not exist. Further, it has been demonstrated over and over again that the vast majority of fractures observed in outcrop are not solely the result of surface conditions. Handbook of Soil Sciences is the second edition of a comprehensive reference work on the discipline of soil science as practiced today. The new edition has been completely revised and rewritten to reflect the current state of knowledge.
