This book is intended for the use of advanced students, research workers, and teachers in the field of petrology. Its aim is to present a unified general impression of the origin and evolution of rocks that are generally believed to have crystallized, or to have been profoundly modified, at high temperatures and at pressures such as prevail from the earth's surface to a depth of perhaps 20 km.

After a 20-year hiatus, we are pleased to bring you the 2nd Edition of Fundamentals of Groundwater. Like its predecessor, the book is written at an introductory level to facilitate learning and teaching, while maintaining appropriate rigor. Not surprisingly, much has changed with this edition in terms of its look and feel and importantly the content. Most obvious is the use of color in many figures throughout the book. As the book progressed, the dearth in high-quality colored figures and photographs in traditional journal articles became obvious. Fortunately, here in the United States, groundwater-related documents and reports of the U.S. Geological Survey represent a valuable treasure of high-quality graphical material.

Petrology is a required subject of study in a majority of geology programs in the United States and is an integral part of geology curricula in Canada and elsewhere in the world. The subject merits this important position because rocks make up much of the Earth. Furthermore, many subdisciplines in geology incorporate petrologic knowledge. Thus, petrology provides the foundation for the study of the Earth and its history.

The primary purpose and scope of this book were already covered in great detail in the first edition. Therefore, rather than repeating that information again and dwelling on the details, only the highlights and changes made in the second edition distinguishing it from the first edition are included here.

The physical theories behind Measurement-While-Drilling design should be rich in scientific challenges, engineering principles and mathematical elegance. To develop the next generation of high-data-rate tools, these must be understood and applied unfailingly without compromise. But one does not simply peruse the latest petroleum books, state-of-the-art reviews, or the most recent patents to understand their teachings. Most descriptions are just wrong. The science itself does not exist.
