Rock mechanics and engineering. Volume 4: Excavation, spport and monitoring / Механика горных пород и инженерное дело. Часть 4. Разработка, поддержка и мониторинг из прошлого в будущее

Although engineering activities involving rock have been underway for millennia, we can mark the beginning of the modern era from the year 1962 when the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) was formally established in Salzburg, Austria. Since that time, both rock engineering itself and the associated rock mechanics research have increased in activity by leaps and bounds, so much so that it is difficult for an engineer or researcher to be aware of all the emerging developments, especially since the information is widely spread in reports, magazines, journals, books and the internet. It is appropriate, if not essential, therefore that periodically an easily accessible structured survey should be made of the currently available knowledge. Thus, we are most grateful to Professor Xia-Ting Feng and his team, and to the Taylor & Francis Group, for preparing this extensive 2017 “Rock Mechanics and Engineering” compendium outlining the state of the art—and which is a publication fitting well within the Taylor & Francis portfolio of ground engineering related titles. <...>

Rock mechanics and rock engineering. Vol 1-2 / Горная механика и горная инженерия

Rock is the main constituent of the crust of the Earth, and its behavior is the most complex one among all materials in the geosphere to be dealt with by humankind. Furthermore, it contains various discontinuities, which make the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of rocks more complex. These simply require a higher level of knowledge and intelligence within the Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (RMRE) community.

Rock mechanics and rock engineering: from the past to the future / Горная механика и инженерия горных пород: из прошлого в будущее

The International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) has entrusted the Turkish National Society for Rock Mechanics with the organization of the EUROCK2016 ISRM International Symposium entitled “Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering: From the Past to the Future”, which will be held in Cappadocia (Ürgüp – Nev¸sehir), Turkey, 29–31 August 2016. EUROCK2016 is a continuation of the successful series of ISRM Symposia for Europe which was first held in 1992 in Chester, UK. We are honourd and pleased that the Turkish community of rock mechanics has been given the opportunity to host for the first time a EUROCK symposium. It is also a pleasant occasion that EURCK2016 coincides with the semi-centennial anniversary of the First ISRM International Congress on Rock Mechanics which was held in September 1966, in Lisbon, Portugal <...>

Rock mechanics for underground mining / Механика горных пород при подземной разработке полезных ископаемых (Геомеханика)

The engineering mechanics problem posed in all structural design is the prediction of the performance of the structure under the loads imposed on it during its prescribed functional operation. The subject of engineering rock mechanics, as applied in mining engineering practice, is concerned with the application of the principles of engineering mechanics to the design of the rock structures generated by mining activity. The discipline is closely related to the main streams of classical mechanics and continuum mechanics, but several specific factors identify it as a distinct and coherent field of engineering. <...>

Rock mechanics in civil and environmental engineering / Механика горных пород в гражданском строительстве и охране окружающей среды

The Proceedings of EUROCK 2010 is a collection of 6 keynotes and 193 technical papers accepted by the symposium. As an annual European regional event of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), EUROCK has been a major exchange and discussion platform for the international rock mechanics community. Rock mechanics in Europe has been undergoing some major transformation during the last two decades. The reduction of mining activities in Europe affects heavily on rock mechanics teaching and research at universities and institutes. At the same time, new merging activities, notably, underground infrastructure construction, geothermal energy development, radioactive waste and CO2 repository, and natural hazard management, are creating new opportunities of research and engineering. Rock mechanics today is closely associated with, and indeed part of, construction, energy, and environmental engineering.

Rock Mechanics in Underground Construction. ISRM International Symposlym 2006 4th Asian Rock Mechanics Symposium / Механика горных пород в подземном строительстве

In the context of underground construction, forensic engineering is taken to be the application of engineering principles and methodologies to determine the cause of a performance deficiency, often a collapse, in an excavation, and the reporting of the findings, usually in the form of an expert opinion within the legal system. The procedures that may be used in forensic geotechnical investigations and the interface of the engineer with the legal system are discussed. The application of the principles and methodologies outlined are illustrated through a brief account of the investigation of the collapse of a small part of an excavation in the Lane Cove Tunnel Project, Sydney, Australia, on 2 November, 2005. <...>

Rock mechanics through project-based learning / Механика горных пород (геомеханика) через проектное обучение

Our experience as teachers indicates that a traditional format where the instructor provides students with theoretical knowledge through a series of lectures and abstract textbook problems is not sufficient to prepare students to tackle real geotechnical challenges. There is a disjunct between what students are taught in universities and what they are expected to do as engineers. Although students may easily derive complex equations in class, they often struggle when faced with practical engineering problems in the workplace. It is thus not surprising that a project-based approach to learning, which partially simulates what engineers do in real life, has proved to be a valid alternative to the traditional method (Gratchev and Jeng, 2018; Gratchev et al., 2018). Project-based learning not only provides students with opportunities to better understand the fundamentals of geotechnical engineering, but it also allows them to gain more practical experience and learn how to apply theory to practice.  In addition, working on a practical project makes the learning process more relevant and engaging. <...>

Rock mechanics. An introduction / Горная механика (механика горных пород, геомеханика). Введение

Rock mechanics is a subject that is not commonly present in most undergraduate civil engineering curriculums worldwide. It is sometimes taught as

an elective subject in the final year of the bachelor’s degree program or as a postgraduate subject. Nevertheless, civil and mining engineers and academicians would agree on the usefulness and the value of some exposure to rock mechanics at the undergraduate level. Ideally speaking, engineering geology
