The Eastern Himalaya begins in the Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalaya (DSH). It is situated between Nepal and Bhutan to the east and west, respectively. The third highest mountain on Earth, Kanchenjunga (8586 m elevation from mean sea level), is shared between Sikkim and Nepal in the west, while the Yadong-Gulu rift graben is flanked by the ridge line that forms Sikkim’s eastern boundary. The DarjeelingSikkim Himalaya’s northern limit is defined by the South Tibet Detachment (STD) system, which includes a tiny piece of the Tibetan plateau, while its southern boundary is defined by the Main Frontal fault system.

The Aptian to Early Albian Gething Formation comprises a nonmarine to marine sequence of interstratified conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, mudstone and coal, and ranges from 18 m to approximately 1100 m thick. In the Burnt-Sukunka rivers area and part of the Monkman-Stony Lake area, the formation is subdivided into three lithostratigraphic units which, in ascending order, are the Gaylard (new), Bullmoose (new) and Chamberlain (now formally defined and revised) members.
Results and conclusions are presented of U-Pb, Rb-Sr and K-Ar studies in three areas of southern District of Keewatin. The results of U-Pb studies on zircon are generally complex and age interpretations are not necessarily unique. The geology, more fully described elsewhere, is summarized in this report. Aneikuni-Yathkyed lakes area. U-Pb age results on zircon indicate that the age of the volcanic-granitoid basement is in the range 2650 to 2680 Ma. K-Ar ages on hornblende and biotite in the Archean basement rocks are commonly ca. 1700 Ma, typical of ages re-set by the Hudsonian Orogeny.
