Проблема изучения складчато-надвигового строения осадочного чехла юга Сибирской платформы, обозначенная Тетяевым [1928], остается актуальной до настоящего времени. Складчато-надвиговые структуры складчатого обрамления юга Сибирский платформы изучались многими исследователями [Александров, 1989; Карасев, 1969; Кононов, 1960; Мигурский, Старосельцев, 1989, др]. Исследованиями последних лет [Сметанин, 2000, Сизых, 2001, Мазукабзов, 2003] установлено, что складчато-надвиговые структуры юга Сибирской платформы формировались под динамическим влиянием Байкало-Патомского складчато-надвиговового пояса.

Горные районы юга Средней Азии характеризуются высокой сейсмической активностью. На общем фоне большого числа эпицентров землетрясений четко выделяется полоса их наибольшего скопления, протянувшаяся в широтном направлении вдоль южной границы Западного Тянь-Шаня. Эту полосу можно проследить от южного подножия Гиссарского и Заалай-ского хребтов до системы Куньлуня в Синьцзяне.

Central Europe is a complex mosaic of crustal elements, including Cadomian fragments, Caledonian and Variscan microcontinents and suture zones, as well as Mesozoic and Alpine tectonostratigraphic successions (Fig. 1.1). These disparate elements were assembled during the various Precambrian and Phanerozoic (Caledonian, Variscan and Alpine) orogenies, the end result being a geological history of over 3500 million years. Over this long and complex period of crustal evolution, older consolidated crustal elements were repeatedly remobilized and overprinted by later events. 

The Geology of Alaska summarizes the onshore and offshore geology, tectonic evolution, and mineral resources of Alaska and the adjacent continental margin. The volume was prepared at a particularly appropriate time because it follows a period during which there has been an explosive increase in the amount, quality, and regional coverage of earth science data collected in Alaska and because the unifying concepts of plate tectonics and accretionary terranes have become available as a framework for interpreting the data.

Most of the North American continent is underlain by long-cratonized crust. However, the geologists’, geochemists’ and geophysicists’ attention is mainly focused on the surrounding mobile megabelts. Only few publications consider the North American craton as a whole and attempt to review its entire history from the Late Archean to the present. Even in the last, as yet unfinished synopsis, created under the label Decade of North American Geology (DNAG), the geology of the craton is divided between volumes separately considering the Canadian Shield and cratonic platforms, platformal cover and basement, in the U.S. and Canada. <...>

Книга Р. В. ван Беммелена «Геология Индонезии» представляет собой фундаментальную сводку по геологии островной области Юго-Восточной Азии. В обзор включены весь архипелаг Индонезии, Филиппины, Новая Гвинея, Малаккский полуостров, Никобарские и Андаманские острова и остров Кристмас (остров Рождества). Сводка подводит итог основным данным по физической географии, геологии, вулканизму и геофизическим особенностям этой части земной поверхности, которые были получены примерно за сто лет, истекших с начала геологического изучения Индонезии (с 1850 г.).

In the tradition of liberal education, we believe that introductions to sciences should be primarily conceptual rather than informational. Students deserve introductions that reveal the logical framework of a discipline, show relations of that discipline to the totality of man's knowledge, and give them some idea of what it is like to be a participant in the discipline. At the same time, there should be depth and rigor that challenge the mind. Our experience indicates that students are stimulated greatly by constant exposure to scientific controversies, occasional spicy personal feuds or an amusing faux pas. The student also needs to become a partner in the endless process of hypothesis testing, which is what we believe science is all about. In this book, we have tried to use these approaches.
