The worldwide acceptance of the first edition of this book encouraged me to extensively revise and extend the second edition. The book was of value to readers of widely ranging interests as demonstrated by the letters received from scientists, students, mining engineers, editors of periodical papers and teachers.

This revision comes five years after the publication of the first edition. Many entries have been improved and now include new data. In total it includes about 25 000 entries, 1 500 graphic figures and 42 tables.

The first edition was criticized by readers who felt that some entries were not related to respective materials: but I would like to emphasize that many minerals are described in the form of references necessary for determining other gemstone materials.

In this edition chapters on light, color and colorant are dealt with in more depth, a large section introduces new terms applying to these areas.

This work is the result of contributions from 52 active researchers in geophysics, astrophysics and astronomy. We have followed a philosophy of directness and simplicity, while still allowing contributors flexibility to expand in their own areas of expertise. They are cited in the contributors’ list, but I take this opportunity to thank the contributors for their efforts and their patience. The subject areas of this dictionary at the time of this writing are among the most active of the physical sciences. Astrophysics and astronomy are enjoying a new golden era, with remarkable observations in new wave bands (γ -rays, X-rays, infrared, radio) and in new fields: neutrino and (soon) gravitational wave astronomy.

Словарь включает исчерпывающие объяснения 240 морфологических терминов, используемых при детальном изучении и описании представителей группы. Даются методические указания для наблюдения изучаемых объектов, отмечается характер изменений разных морфологических структур в течение онтогенеза, размах их индивиду- ' альной изменчивости и типы сохранности.
Для всех терминов приведена соответствующая терминология на английском языке и алфавитный указатель английских терминов и выражений, употребляемых при описании продуктид.

География паука, изучать которую мы начинаем с детства н продолжаем изучать всю жизнь. И дело здесь ае только в присущей человеку любознательности, а, прежде всего, в настоятельной практической потребности глубже познать тот мир, в котором мы живем, с его громадны.'! разнообразием пространственных различий в природных, экономических, социальных явлениях и процессах и их сочетаниях. Знание географической карты. умение её «читать», широкое использование географических справочников и атласов, географических описаний различных местностей, стран и народов давно уже считаются неотъемлемыми элементами культуры человека. Пурный рост подвижности населения, развитие массового туризма сделали географическую литературу, атласы и карты необходимыми атрибутами нашей повседневной жизни.

В словаре приведены толкования терминов и понятий наиболее часто употребляемых в сфере геолого-географического образования и практики и имеющих важное значение для усвоения матери-ала курса «Геоморфология».

In preparing this new edition of our Dictionary of Geology and Earth Sciences I have changed the emphasis very slightly by increasing the number of entries for terms that are directly geological. The new title reflects this minor revision. At the same time, however, I have found it necessary to add more entries describing satellite missions and planetary discoveries. I have also added a new Appendix, listing web addresses for all the satellite missions described in dictionary entries.

Inevitably, the dictionary has grown a little longer. That is the way of dictionaries. New terms emerge, but old ones take a long time to die and disappear from the vocabulary. As with the third edition, I have worked alone. I have scrutinized every entry and made many small changes where I thought I could improve the clarity of definitions. If, inadvertently, I have introduced any errors, or failed to spot and remove earlier errors, I have no one to blame but myself.
