In the tradition of liberal education, we believe that introductions to sciences should be primarily conceptual rather than informational. Students deserve introductions that reveal the logical framework of a discipline, show relations of that discipline to the totality of man's knowledge, and give them some idea of what it is like to be a participant in the discipline. At the same time, there should be depth and rigor that challenge the mind. Our experience indicates that students are stimulated greatly by constant exposure to scientific controversies, occasional spicy personal feuds or an amusing faux pas. The student also needs to become a partner in the endless process of hypothesis testing, which is what we believe science is all about. In this book, we have tried to use these approaches.
Humankind first began to create imagery as a means of communication some 7,500 years ago. The writing, back then, was literally on the wall. It began with cave art, and then was engraved into stone blocks. These first protolanguages used pictures as literal depictions of events, and this evolved into a system of simpler symbols that were representative of the sounds used in speech.
In the years since the 1977 Aegean conferences in Athens and Izmir there has been an explosion of new information on the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly on the Turkish area. Some three years ago we sensed that the time might be ripe for a meeting to consider all aspects of geology relevant to the tectonic evolution of the Eastern Mediterranean. We sounded out opinion in most of the European laboratories involved and received enthusiastic support for the idea. The boundaries of the area to be discussed were fixed early on: the Apennines to the west, the Carpathians and Caucasus to the north, the Zagros to the east and North Africa to the south. The meeting concentrated on the Late Palaeozoic to Recent evolution, as few coherent tracts of older rocks exist in the area.
Compared to entire continents, islands are miniature worlds with discrete ecologies that are both more vulnerable to environmental disruption and more fertile as incubators of biological innovation. This book offers excursions to a dozen ancient islands caught in geologic time with relationships exceptionally preserved among fossil plants and animals in the context of the coastal settings they once inhabited.
Earth is a dynamic planet that has changed continuously during its 4.6 billion years of existence. The size, shape, and geographic distribution of the continents and ocean basins have changed through time, as have the atmosphere and biota. As scientists and concerned citizens, we have become increasingly aware of how fragile our planet is and, more importantly, how interdependent all of its various systems and subsystems are. We have also learned that we cannot continually pollute our environment and that our natural resources are limited and, in most cases, nonrenewable. Furthermore, we are coming to realize how central geology is to our everyday lives. For these and other reasons, geology is one of the most important college or university courses a student can take.
