The first part of this chapter briefly introduces the application of Ca stable isotopes in Earth sciences and other branches of natural sciences and summarizes the early history of Ca isotope research. Furthermore, tables with fundamental reference data are provided. The second part introduces the principles of equilibrium and kinetic isotope fractionation theory and discusses isotope fractionation in open and closed systems. It briefly touches on the mass-dependence of equilibrium and kinetic isotope fractionation and approaches to obtain equilibrium isotope fractionation factors experimentally. During the last few years, carbonatites have received a considerable amount of attention. Some of this interest was no doubt kindled by the importance of volatiles in the Earth's mantle, particularly CO2 , by the fact that carbonatites can be used to monitor the chemical evolution of the sub-continental upper mantle, and by the fact that carbonatites may be effective metasomatizing agents at both mantle and crustal levels. 

The lower Chickabally Mudstone Member of the Budden Canyon Formation is Ba'rfemian and probable lowermost Aptian in age. Its lower contact is gradational with the Roaring River Member 'of 'the formation, but is bounded above by an angular unconformity at the base of the Huling Member in the Mitchell Creek Area of the Ono Quadrangle. The unconformity is documented by the angular relation of beds in the two members, the thinning section in the lower Chickabally Member from southwest to northeast, and the cutting out of fossil zones in the lower Chickabally Member from south to north.

This sixth edition of Physical Geology is a straightforward, easy-to-read introduction to geology for both geology majors and nonmajors. The organization of the book is traditional and matches the organization of most lab manuals. Each chapter has been written to be as self-contained as possible so that the instructor can reorganize the chapter sequence if desired. 

Major revisions have been made in the text of the introductory chapter and in the chapters on igneous rocks, plate tectonics, and mountains. Chapter 1 has been shortened. The plate-tectonic origin of volcanic and plutonic rocks has been clarified and combined in chapter 4.

In the tradition of liberal education, we believe that introductions to sciences should be primarily conceptual rather than informational. Students deserve introductions that reveal the logical framework of a discipline, show relations of that discipline to the totality of man's knowledge, and give them some idea of what it is like to be a participant in the discipline. At the same time, there should be depth and rigor that challenge the mind. Our experience indicates that students are stimulated greatly by constant exposure to scientific controversies, occasional spicy personal feuds or an amusing faux pas. The student also needs to become a partner in the endless process of hypothesis testing, which is what we believe science is all about. In this book, we have tried to use these approaches.

Earth is a dynamic planet that has changed continuously during its 4.6 billion years of existence. The size, shape, and geographic distribution of the continents and ocean basins have changed through time, as have the atmosphere and biota. As scientists and concerned citizens, we have become increasingly aware of how fragile our planet is and, more importantly, how interdependent all of its various systems and subsystems are. We have also learned that we cannot continually pollute our environment and that our natural resources are limited and, in most cases, nonrenewable.

Arid environments may not be the most hospitable places n Earth, but the 30 % or more of the global land surface that they cover does support an ever-growing human population and has fascinated travellers, explorers and scientists for centuries. Early geomorphological studies were frequently carried out indirectly, sometimes even unwittingly, by those whose main purpose and motives lay elsewhere: inevitably, but with some notable exceptions, their accounts were descriptive and unscientific. Some would even argue that these traits persisted and dominated desert geomorphological studies well into the second half of this century.
