The Kupol epithermal Au-Ag vein district is located in the northern part of the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt, a Late Cretaceous subduction-related continental volcanic arc exposed for >3,000 km along the eastern coast of Russia. High-grade veins are hosted in the Kupol andesite sequence, a 300- to 1,000-m-thick, subhorizontal, layered sequence of andesite flows, sills, and ash tuffs, dated at 97 to 96 Ma (Cenomanian). The Kupol andesite sequence is underlain by mixed mafic-felsic volcanic units plus sedimentary rocks (“older volcanics”) and overlain by a >1-km-thick “upper felsic” sequence of dacitic-rhyolitic tuffs and associated dikes and flow domes, dated at 95 to 85 Ma, with local sequences of fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary rocks.

The aim of this book is to provide reliable information not only on the science of crystallization from solution and from melt but also on the basic design methods for laboratory and especially industrial crystallizers. Up to now the niche between scientific results and practical design and operation of large-scale crystallizers has scarcely been filled. A work devoted to this objective has to take into account relevant crystallization phenomena as well as chemical engineering processes such as fluid dynamics, multiphase flow, and heat and mass transfer. In the design of crystallizers, experiments are initially performed on laboratory crystallizers to obtain kinetic data. In this book, information is given on reliable scale-up of such crystallizers.

The authors embarked on the preparation of this book some years ago without realising the magnitude of the task they had set themselves. The original idea stemmed from the realisation that although petrography is now widely acknowledged as a tool for the investigation of hardened concrete, there are no modern texts on the subject. Older books covering the general areas of cements, clinkers, concretes and related materials may have become outdated and most are long out of print. The authors, therefore, have had to gather information from a wide range of published and unpublished sources as well as drawing on their own research material and experience.
