The emphasis of this volume is on the characterization of uranium deposits. Chapter 1 includes an introductory note in the form of a brief summary of world uranium resources and their definitions with respect to confidence classes and cost categories. This was considered justified insofar as an understanding of an ore deposit cannot be achieved from purely geological parameters. Economic considerations have to be included. Demand for the commodity and, in the western world, related price/cost factors dictate and define whether a localized metal concentration is a deposit that can be profitably exploited presently or in the future, or whether it is a mineral occurrence of only scientific value.

The history of recorded geological observations of the Egyptian Eastern Desert and Sinai is divided into five stages: Pharaonic, Roman to early Ottoman, nineteenth century, twentieth century to the 1950s and post-1950s. Pharaonic interests were mainly resource-focused (gold, gemstones, hard stone) and are exemplified by the Turin Papyrus geological map. Roman to early Ottoman activities followed similar motivations and transported huge quantities of Egyptian stone across the Mediterranean.

The dry sand stretches away as far as I can see to the east and the west. The July sun burns a hole in the sky and sears the desert basin. Shimmering heat waves ripple the sand at the horizon and make the refl ections of the mountains fl icker upside down on the pseudoliquid surface. The sandy mud has shrunk and cracked since the last summer rain and has formed polygonal fractures in the barren brown surface. These are the only marks on the sand.
