Geologists have long maintained that their discipline differs strikingly from chemistry and physics in being historical. There has been almost no explicit consideration by geologists, however, of the particular methodological problems imposed by the historical dimension. Historians and philosophers, on the other hand, have considered the problems of historical method at great length, and in recent years there has been, it seems, an increased interest in the methodology and philosophy of history. It is my purpose here to consider the extent to whieh the issues raised in recent discussions of explanation in human history are pertinent to the problem of explanation in historical geology. Because paleontology presents special methodological problems that I shall later discuss in detail (see pp. 148-70), Ihave omitted at this point any consideration of geological explanations containing paleontological concepts. <...>

The Gull Rapids area, Manitoba, lies on the Superior craton margin and forms part of the Superior Boundary Zone (SBZ), a major collisional zone between the Archean Superior craton and the adjacent Paleoproterozoic Trans-Hudson Orogen. There are two main rock assemblages at Gull Rapids: orthogneisses (of possible Split Lake Block origin) and supracrustal rocks (metavolcanic and metasedimentary). Late, crosscutting felsic and mafic intrusive bodies (mostly dykes and sills) are used to constrain the relative and absolute timing of deformation and metamorphism. 

The oil industry has changed much since I first entered it some 30 years ago, and still more dramatically since I completed the first edition of Elements of Petroleum Geology in 1982. In the past 15 years major changes have occurred in the way in which the oil industry is organized and in how it conducts its business.
Traditionally, the leading edge of research was conducted in the laboratories of the oil companies. Now it is conducted within service companies and consultancies. Whereas traditionally the oil companies were regarded as the best employers in terms of opportunity and continuity of employment, today this is no longer true. The service companies and larger consultancies may now provide better long-term career prospects than the major oil companies.

Although Britain is a major gemstone trader, it currently produces little from indigenous sources. There are, however, records of a wide variety of gem material, particularly in Scotland. In addition to sapphire, ruby and possible diamond, the country has yielded topaz, beryl, and many varieties of semi-precious stones including cairngorm, amethyst, garnet, tourmaline, agate, zircon, ‘Blue John’ flourite and jet. There is also an unconfirmed report of Scottish emerald. Most of these gemstones were found by amateur geologists and gemmologists but recent discoveries, particularly of iamond indicator minerals in Scandinavia and Ireland, have raised commercial interest in the potential of Britain as a source of precious stones. <...>0

В книге изложены физико-химические основы методов повышения эффективности и экономичности буровзрывных работ в горных массивах на примере одного из крупнейших золоторудных месторождений Центральной Сибири -Олимпиадинского месторождения (ОМ) Красноярского края. Рассмотрены вопросы повышения эффективности размола горных пород различного состава. Исследованы ключевые физико-механические характеристики горных пород ОМ: твердость, смачиваемость водными растворами электролитов и поверхностно-активных веществ (ПАВ), влияние этих растворов на твердость компонентов породы и прочность их природных композиций. Рассмотрены пути повышения техникоэкономических показателей процессов бурения, разрушения взрывом, дробления и измельчения горных пород ОМ за счет использования в этих процессах в качестве технологических сред водных растворов электролитов и ПАВ. Даны рекомендации для повышения эффективности процессов промышленной разработки горных пород ОМ. Книга представляет интерес для широкого круга читателей, профессионально связанных с добычей и переработкой полезных ископаемых.
