Water is essential for life. It is required for other uses also such as irrigation, industry, and power development. Its demand is increasing with the increase in population and changes in life style, whereas the availability is practically constant. In India, water is available as precipitation which is concentrated largely in a few months of monsoon season and snowfall in the higher mountains for an equally short time window. Rainfall in monsoon months is also temporally and spatially random.

In the preface to the first edition of Construction Dewatering—New Methods and Applications, the stated intent of the book was to be a source of practical information for engineers and contractors who must contend with groundwater on construction projects. However, current ractice includes many methods besides straightforward dewatering. The content and new title, Construction Dewatering and Groundwater Control, of this third edition reflect this.

This book provides a detailed description of how Python can be used to give insight into the flow of groundwater based on analytic solutions. Starting with simple problems to illustrate the basic principles, complexity is added step by step to show how one-dimensional and twodimensional models of one or two aquifers can be implemented. Steady and transient flow problems are discussed in confined, semi-confined, and unconfined aquifers that may include wells, rivers, and areal recharge. Special consideration is given to coastal aquifers, including the effect of tides and the simulation of interface flow.

Application of Python allows for compact and readable code, and quick visualization of the solutions. Python scripts are provided to reproduce all results. The scripts are also available online so that they can be altered to meet site-specific conditions. This book is intended both as training material for the next generation of university students and as a useful resource for practitioners. A primer is included for those who are new to Python or as a refresher for existing users.

Well test analysis is one of the cornerstones of reservoir analysis, as it is only through the wells that we ever have the opportunity to make direct contact with the reservoir. Nonetheless, the reservoir parameters of importance to us are not measurable directly, hence the need to make an indirect interpretation of pressure and flow rate transients in the process we call well test analysis. The need to solve the inverse problems inherent in well test analysis makes the field one of the most intricate mathematically, while still dependent intimately on the practical characteristics and accuracy of the pressure measurements themselves.

This book deals with image-processing problems that arise in the process of automating some aspects of well log analysis. Each problem is first described in log analysis terms - that is, what task is performed by a log analyst and how it is accomplished in manual processing. Then algorithms for automating each function are presented and their meanings from the point of view of log analysis and image processing are explained. The term image processing is understood here, in its broadest sense, as any processing of any images.

It is to-day generally recognized by environmental scientists that the particular behaviour of trace metals in the environment is determined by their specific physico-chemical forms rather than by their total concentration. With the introduction, several years ago, of atomic absorption spectrometry at many laboratories involved in environmental studies, a technique for simple, rapid and cheap determination of total metal concentrations in environmental samples became available.
