The photographs in this book cover all the main topics of geomorphology: rivers, glaciation, coasts, deserts, chalk and limestone, coral and volcanoes. However, all the pictures on one topic are not grouped together but are arranged so that pictures of landforms which look similar but have different origins are side by side, or at least close together. This demonstrates one purpose of this book, the recognition of landforms by familiarity with clear photographs of them.

The 1970s was a decade when the quest to understand petroleum drilling and production operations offshore acquired a new impetus. While oil producing nations rejoiced at the acquisition of captive resources, the lack of special techniques and equipment loomed onerously.

Environmental remote sensing is the measurement, from a distance, of the spectral features of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere. These measurements are normally made by instruments carried by satellites or aircraft, and are used to infer the nature and characteristics of the land or sea surface, or of the atmosphere, at the time of observation.

Mining operations can generate enormous amounts of waste (i.e. waste rock and tailings) that must be managed and handled in an appropriate way to avoid any possible negative environmental impact, such as air, soil and water pollution.

This book discusses how—by analysis of the physical felds and processes within and on the Earth—we learn how old the Earth is, about its internal structure and external form, and about the causes and properties of its magnetic and temperature felds. What will not be discussed are the geophysical survey methods for characterizing the upper crust that are used to explore for mineral ore deposits and hydrocarbon reservoirs; specialized textbooks should be consulted for these.

This preface presents the sixth edition of our remote sensing text. During the interval that has elapsed since our fifth edition, the pace of remote sensing has increased in several respects, expanding the scope of our text and presenting new content.
