Environmental geology is the study of the relationship between humans and their geological environment. This relationship goes both ways. Not only do naturally occurring geological phenomena affect the lives of people each day, but also human activities affect geological processes, sometimes with tragic consequences. Given the growing global population, the potential risk for experiencing abrupt, if not catastrophic, geological and climatic changes has never been greater for more people.

Sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposits account for more than 50 percent of the world’s zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) reserves (Tikkanen, 1986) and furnish more than 25 percent of the world’s current production of these two metals and a significant amount of silver (Ag) (Goodfellow and Lydon, 2007). More than 129 deposits of this type have been recognized in sedimentary basins around the world (Leach and others, 2005b; Goodfellow and Lydon, 2007). A compilation by Taylor and others (2009) shows that deposits occur in 25 sedimentary basins, 7 of which contain more than 10 million metric tons (Mt) of combined Pb+Zn (figs. 1, 2). In order of decreasing endowment, these basins are the Mt. IsaMcArthur basins, Australia (7 deposits containing 112 Mt of Zn+Pb metal); Selwyn basin, Canada (17 deposits, 55 Mt); Brooks Range, Alaska, United States (3 deposits, 40 Mt); Kholodninskoye deposit, Russia (1 deposit, 23 Mt); Rajasthan basin, India (5 deposits, 20 Mt); Belt-Purcell basin, United States and Canada (1 deposit, 19 Mt); and Rhenish basin, Germany (2 deposits, 11 Mt) (fig. 1). <...>

In an attempt to clarify the significance of Pb model ages in Pb-Zn sedimentary deposits, we report high-precision Pb isotopic compositions for 64 galenas and 52 K-feldspars, the former from ores and the latter separated from granites. All samples are from Spain and  the French Pyrenees. Lead from galena ores is of unequivocal continental origin. With  few exceptions, Pb model ages systematically exceed emplacement ages by up to 400 Ma,  a gap which is well outside the uncertainties of ~30 Ma assigned to the model.

The Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) Central and East Tennessee (TN) Districts contain economically significant lead-zinc deposits that occur in the Early Ordovician carbonates of the Knox Group. Although both districts share similar host rock, have similar temperatures of formation, and typically fill open spaces of collapse breccias or replace their host carbonates, previous studies may suggest that these ores did not form from the same mineralizing fluids and may have different Pb sources.

The purpose of this research has been to determine the origin of the San Vicente zinc-lead deposit based on textural, mineralogical and geochemical studies of the sulfide ores and carbonate host rock. The relatively simple and uncomplicated mineralogy of the ores and host rock permits the application of standard petrographic techniques as well as specialized methods such as cathodoluminescence, electron microprobe analysis, and detailed sulfur isotope geochemistry. <...>

Reviewers of the German edition of this book found that the text deals with facts and descriptions of limestones rather than with global speculations on facies models or large-scale sedimentation patterns. The book is neither a picture-book nor a recipe-book for facies interpretation of carbonates, but an attempt to summarize the present "state of the art" of a rather small but increasingly more important part of geology.
