Parameter estimation is a subject that is standard fare in the many books available on statistics. These books range from the highly theoretical expositions written by statisticians to the more practical treatments contributed by the many users of applied statistics. This text is an attempt to strike a balance between these two extremes. The particular audience we have in mind is the community involved in the design and implementation of signal processing algorithms. As such, the primary focus is on obtaining optimal estimation algorithms that may be implemented on a digital computer. The data sets are therefore assumed to be samples of a continuous-time waveform or a sequence of data points. The choice of topics reflects what we believe to be the important approaches to obtaining an optimal estimator and analyzing its performance. As a consequence, some of the deeper theoretical issues have been omitted with references given instead. <...>

Fluid mechanics forms an essential part of the knowledge of petroleum engineers. Its applications can be found in almost every area of petroleum engineering including drilling, well completing, production technology, transportation and refining. The design methods and everyday practice of these special fields apply their own application-oriented hydraulics. These independently developed branches of applied fluid mechanics are often not very well integrated. There seems to be a need to treat these individual sections together within the general framework of continuum mechanics. In addition, the elegance and logical structure of this theory may influence the way of thinking of petroleum engineers. <...>

In the last fifty years, there have been major advances in the acquisition, processing and interpretation of seismic reflection data. These advances have been driven largely by the spectacular developments in the electronic and computer industries.
The first was the common midpoint (CMP) method for acquiring data (Mayne, 1962). CMP methods improve the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios of primary reflections through stacking redundant data.

Many materials are polycrystalline aggregates of tiny crystallites or grains of various sizes and shapes. Even for aggregates whose crystallites are chemically identical, the crystal lattices of the grains will still differ in their orientation in space. Since each crystallite is anisotropic in its physical properties, the macroscopic properties of a polycrystal will likewise be anisotropic unless the orientations of its constituent crystallites are completely random and the anisotropies of the crystallites even themselves out.

“Structural Control” remains a crucial point that is frequently absent in scientific and/or economic analyses of ore deposits, whatever their type and class, although a selection of references illustrates its importance [1–5]. The case of lode deposits is particularly adapted, but other types, like breccia pipes, stockwork, massive sulphides, skarn, etc., also concern Structural Control. Works on the Structural Control of ore deposits are not abundant in the recent literature, and, as frequently suggested, structural geology often is not sufficiently developed in the exploration programs of many mining camp’s strategies.
