Ophiolites in Earth history / Офиолиты в истории Земли

This book is derived from the interdisciplinary, contemporary work of the international ophiolite community in a most up-to-date treatment of process-oriented problems and questions on the generation and evolution of ophiolites. It is a large collection of research papers from a wide range of international contributors. Some of these papers were presented in thematic ophiolite sessions at the 2001 Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America (Boston) and the 2001 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (San Francisco). The 32 papers here examine the mode and nature of igneous, metamorphic, tectonic, sedimentological, and biological processes associated with the evolution of oceanic crust in different tectonic settings in Earth history as revealed in various ophiolites and ophiolite belts around the world, and the geodynamic significance of these ophiolites in the evolution of different orogenic systems. Divided into six thematic sections, the book presents a wealth of new data and syntheses from mainly Phanerozoic ophiolites around the world <...>

Optical mineralogy / Оптическая минералогия

Austin F. Rogers, the senior author of the first two editions of this text and professor emeritus in mineralogy at Stanford University, passed away at Berkeley, California, in April, 1957. His wise counsel as a former professor and his judgment as a mineralogist have been greatly missed during this revision. On the other hand, many readers, particularly those most familiar with Professor Rogers and his work, will recognize the influence of his teaching and will remember portions of the text which remain unchanged in the third edition.

Optical mineralogy. Principles & practice. A practical introduction to optical mineralogy / Оптическая минералогия. Принципы и практика. Практическое введение в оптическую минералогию

Microscopy is a servant of all the sciences, and the microscopic examination of minerals is an important technique which should be mastered by all students of geology early in their careers. Advanced modern textbooks on both optics and mineralogy are available, and our intention is not that this new textbook should replace these but that it should serve as an introductory text or a first stepping-stone to the study of optical mineralogy. The present text has been written with full awareness that it will probably be used as a laboratory handbook, serving as a quick reference to the properties of minerals, but nevertheless care has been taken to present a systematic explanation of the use of the microscope as well as theoretical aspects of optical mineralogy. The book is therefore suitable for the novice either studying as an individual or participating in classwork. <...>

Optically anomalous crystals / Оптические аномалии в кристаллах

The most striking features of crystals are their symmetric, polyhedral forms. Federov said that crystals “flash-forth their symmetry” (Shubnikov and Kopstik, 1974), a strong allusion to the sharp, highly reflecting surfaces of well-formed crystals prized by enthusiasts. We learned from Häuy that the shapes of crystals reflect the arrangements of the particles from which they are constructed. Today, these arrangements are routinely deduced from x-ray diffraction patterns. In the 19th Century, prior to the discovery of x-rays, the perturbations to the state of visible light traversing a crystal were used to assay symmetry.

Ideally, the symmetry of a crystal that an investigator would deduce from shape, from the transmission of visible light, from the scattering of x-rays, or from any other method, should be the same. However, as early as 1818, David Brewster in Edinburgh first noticed that some crystals appeared to have lower optical symmetries than morphological symmetries (Brewster, 1818b). <...>

Optimisation of the grade control procedures at the Yandi iron-ore mine, Western Australia: geostatistical approach / Оптимизация процедур контроля качества на железорудном руднике Янди, Западная Австралия: геостатистический подход

Effectiveness of ore grade control at operating mines depends on both the quality and quantity of the samples used. Therefore, optimisation of grade control procedures requires analysis of sample quality and their spatial distribution. This approach, implying quantitative estimation of both these factors and quantification of their contribution to the grade control errors, was used for comparing two different grade control procedures at the Yandicoogina (Yandi) iron-ore open pit mine, located in the eastern part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. At Yandi, pisolitic iron oxide mineralisation is distributed within a meandering palaeoriver channel, characterised by abundant clay pods that contain the deleterious components; in particular Al2O3 and SiO2.

Optimization techniques and their applications to mine systems / Методы оптимизации и их применение в системах разработки месторождений

This book describes the fundamental and theoretical concepts of optimization algorithms in a systematic manner, along with their potential applications and implementation strategies in mining engineering. It explains basics of systems engineering, linear programming, and integer linear programming, transportation and assignment algorithms, network analysis, dynamic programming, queuing theory and their applications to mine systems.

Orbody modelling and strategic mine planning. Uncertainty and risk management models (AuaIMM)/ Моделирование рудных тел и стратегическое планирование горных работ. Модели управления неопределенностью и рисками

‘Orebody modelling and strategic mine planning’ are arguably the backbone of our industry and represent an intricate, complex and critically important part of mining ventures. They have a profound effect on the value of a mine, as well as determining the technical plan to be followed from mine development to mine closure.
It is most gratifying to introduce the second revised edition of this Spectrum Series volume on the above topic, following the depletion of all copies of the first edition within about a year of its publication.

Ordovician-silurian biostratigraphy and paleogeography of the Gorny Altay / Ордовикско-силурийская биостратиграфия и палеонтология Горного Алтая

This book is an expanded guidebook for a field excursion to the OrdovicianSilurian sections of the Gorny Altai being shown to participants in the International Symposium "Development of Early Paleozoic Biodiversity: Role of Biotic and Abiotic Factors, and Event Correlation", Moscow, 2008. The Symposium is another event in IGCP 503 "Ordovician Palaeogeography and Palaeoclimate" (2004--08) which follows the International Symposium "Palaeogeography and Global Correlation of Ordovician Events" held as part of the same project in 2006 in Novosibirsk, and the accompanying field excursion to the Cambrian-Ordovician section along the Kulyumbe River on the S iberian P latform organized by the Russian team (Palaeogeography, 2006; Kanygin et al., 2006).

Ore deposit geology / Геология месторождений полезных ископаемых

Ore deposit geology may be taught late in a student’s undergraduate programme, or even at the beginning of a graduate programme. At this stage the student is able to link many of the concepts involved in ore genesis into his or her knowledge of the building blocks of the geosciences. Or it may be taught early, to show students potential applications of their emerging knowledge. This book is designed for the former case and also to be a reference if a student chooses to work professionally in the field. Knowledge typical of standard undergraduate courses in mineralogy, igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary geology, structural geology and tectonics, and geomorphology are assumed, together with some basic chemistry. It is not assumed that students have had courses in isotope geochemistry or in geochemical thermodynamics. <...>

Ore deposit geology and its influence on mineral exploration / Геология рудных месторождений и её влияние на разведку полезных ископаемых

In their introduction to the 75th Anniversary Volume of Economic Geology, Skinner and Simms (1981) recalled the philosophy of the founders of that prestigious journal. From the outset the objectives were defined as the scientific study of ore deposits, with particular emphasis on 'the chemical, physical arid structural problems bearing on their genesis.' At the same time a deliberate decision was made to avoid the 'engineering and commercial aspects of mining.' The emphasis on the genesis of ore deposits and  the avoidance of the practical aspects of mining geology have characterized not only the premier Western publication concerned with ore deposits, but also a tradition of teaching in the Western World. As a result newly graduating students who have taken courses in economic geology may be forgiven for believing that the study of ore genesis is the principal task of the industrial geologist. This attitude is very evident to us because we interview a large number of students who are on the point of graduating in geology . We continue to be surprised by the wide variations in the amount of time a new graduate may have devoted to the study of ore deposits during his or her university or college career. <...>
