Practical interpretation of mineral resource and ore reserve classification guidelines / Практическое применение руководства по классификации минеральных ресурсов и рудных запасов

The Australasian Code for reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) was updated in 1999 (JORC 1999). This paper has been written as an update of Snowden (1996 and 1997) to recognise the large amount of experience with the use of the JORC Code gained by industry over the last four years, and describes the latest developments in technology and toolkits for risk classification.

Practical interpretation of resource classification guidelines / Практическое применение руководства по классификации минеральных ресурсов

Mineral resource and ore reserve classification defines the risk associated with quoted resource tonnes and grades, allowing the interested party to make a judgement as to the ‘worth’ of the resource statement. The JORC Code and Guidelines (1992) are now well entrenched as the foundation upon which gold and base metal deposits in particular are publicly reported. There are three categories of resource, namely Measured, Indicated or Inferred reflecting decreasing levels of confidence. The ore reserve, that is the economically mineable part of the resource, is classified as Proven or Probable and can only be drawn from the Measured and Indicated resource categories. <...>

Practical issues in the construction of control charts in mining applications / Практические вопросы построения контрольных карт в горнодобывающей промышленности

The Shewhart X— and R charts are still the most popular control charts in use today for continuous monitoring of quality data. However, for these charts to function properly, the underlying assumption of normality and independence of data must be satisfied. When either independence and/or normality of data are not present, which is a common feature of ore quality data, an application of the conventional Shewhart X— and R charts may introduce false alarms in the analysis of the data.

Practical rock engineering / Практическая разработка горных пород

We tend to think of rock engineering as a modern discipline and yet, as early as 1773, Coulomb included results of tests on rocks from Bordeaux in a paper read before the French Academy in Paris (Coulomb, 1776, Heyman, 1972). French engineers started construction of the Panama Canal in 1884 and this task was taken over by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1908. In the half century between 1910 and 1964, 60 slides were recorded in cuts along the canal and, although these slides were not analysed in rock mechanics terms, recent work by the US Corps of Engineers (Lutton et al, 1979) shows that these slides were predominantly controlled by structural discontinuities and that modern rock mechanics concepts are fully applicable to the analysis of these failures. In discussing the Panama Canal slides in his Presidential Address to the first international conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering in 1936, Karl Terzaghi (Terzaghi, 1936, Terzaghi and Voight, 1979) said ‘The catastrophic descent of the slopes of the deepest cut of the Panama Canal issued a warning that we were overstepping the limits of our ability to predict the consequences of our actions ....’. <...>

Practical rock mechanics / Практическая механика горных пород

In geology, ‘rock’ may be defined as a natural aggregate of minerals (Whitten and Brooks, 1972), which is a very broad definition that encompasses all naturally-formed soil and rock as otherwise distinguished in engineering practice. In geotechnical engineering, the term ‘rock mechanics’ is usually confined to the stronger and lithified end of the spectrum – the state when the mineral grains have become bonded and cemented together over geological time.

Practical seismic data analysis / Практический анализ сейсмических данных

This modern introduction to seismic data processing in both exploration and global geophysics demonstrates practical applications through real data and tutorial examples. The underlying physics and mathematics of the various seismic analysis methods are presented, giving students an appreciation of their limitations and potential for creating models of the subsurface. Designed for a one-semester course, this textbook discusses key techniques within the context of the world’s ever-increasing need for petroleum and mineral resources – equipping upper undergraduate and graduate students with the tools they need for a career in industry.

Practice of constitutive modelling for saturated soils / Практика структурного моделирования для насыщенных почв

Constitutive models are fundamental training for graduate students in geotechnical engineering. For a long time, however, these models have lacked a simple and easy-to-understand platform for learning, training and practice between the theory and practice of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Many engineers and practitioners, and even some researchers, have reservations about this topic. There is a mismatch between research and application. Especially in recent years, constitutive models aiming at refined simulations have been continuously developed, with increasing complexity and parameters. In addition, difficulties in parameter calibration have given rise to barriers to their use in geotechnical engineering. Therefore, the establishment of a simple, easy-to-understand, easy-to-use learning, training and practice platform can serve as a bridge between theory and practice. This book, with its supporting platform software, is a welcome attempt to make constitutive models more accessible to both researchers and practitioners alike. <...>
