Many of the Earth’s most fascinating natural processes are related to rock fractures.Volcanic eruptions, tectonic earthquakes, geysers, large landslides and the formation and development of mid-ocean ridges all depend on fracture formation and propagation. Rock fractures

are also of fundamental importance in more applied fields such as those related to fluidfilled reservoirs, deep crustal drilling, tunnelling, road construction, dams, geological and geophysical mapping and field geology and geophysics.

There has been great progress in understanding fracture initiation and propagation over the past decades. The results of this progress are summarised in many papers, textbooks and monographs within the fields of fracture mechanics and materials science. Much of this improved knowledge of fracture development is of great relevance for understanding and modelling geological processes that relate to rock fractures. <...>

Rock fragmentation by blasting / Разрушение горных пород взрывом

This work summarizes recent research at Swebrec and SveBeFo. It has led to a new  fragment size distribution with an unexpected ability to reproduce sieving curves of all kinds of rock and concrete/mortar that have been blasted or crushed in almost every conceivable way. The three-parameter Swebrec function is described but its parameters are not independent. Examples of curve fits are given as is some advice about the fitting procedure. Its relations to other comminution concepts such as t10 from JKMRC are explored. How to use the Swebrec function for full-scale blasts is described, especially for large blasts where the available information is very limited. The final section treats design curves, which can predict the changes in fragmentation that are caused by changes in specific charge and other geometrical parameters of a bench blast. Evidence to the effect of confining debris at the free face is finally presented

In the field of rock grouting constant advances are being made in the development of equipment, methods and materials. One major improvement is the implementation of measures relating to health, safety and the environment (HSE) in grouting operations in tunnels and rock caverns.

This publication presents common, standard rock grouting practice in Norway today. The book provides guidelines for the practical execution of grouting in rock caverns, focusing primarily on equipment, materials and operations at the working face. There are brief descriptions of each of the operations involved in rock grouting.

Since that time, both rock engineering itself and the associated rock mechanics research have increased in activity by leaps and bounds, so much so that it is difficult for an ngineer or researcher to be aware of all the emerging developments, especially since  the information is widely spread in reports, magazines, journals,  books and the internet. It is appropriate, if not essential, therefore that periodically an easily accessible structured survey should be made of the currently available knowledge. Thus, we are most grateful to Professor Xia-Ting Feng and his team, and to the Taylor & Francis Group, for preparing this extensive 2017 “Rock Mechanics and Engineering” compendium outlining the state of the art—and which is a publication fitting well within the Taylor & Francis portfolio of ground engineering related titles.<...>

The International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) has entrusted the Turkish National Society for Rock Mechanics with the organization of the EUROCK2016 ISRM International Symposium entitled “Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering: From the Past to the Future”, which will be held in Cappadocia (Ürgüp – Nev¸sehir), Turkey, 29–31 August 2016. EUROCK2016 is a continuation of the successful series of ISRM Symposia for Europe which was first held in 1992 in Chester, UK. We are honourd and pleased that the Turkish community of rock mechanics has been given the opportunity to host for the first time a EUROCK symposium.
