Physical geology. Exploring the Earth / Общая геология. Изучая Землю

The purpose of this study guide is to assist the college student in the introductory level geology class with the sometimes daunting task of assimilating the material presented in the textbook. It is designed both to act as a guide while reading each chapter and to test you on the material after the chapter has been read and studied. To maximize its use read this preface before starting the first chapter. <...>

Physical geology. Exploring the Eatrh / Общая геология. Исследуя Землю

The Earth is a dynamic planet that has changed contin- uously during its 4.6 billion years of existence. The size, shape, and geographic distribution of the continents and ocean basins have changed through time, as have the atmosphere and biota. Over the past 20 years, bold new theories and discoveries concerning the Earth's origin and how it works have sparked a renewed interest in geology. We have become increasingly aware of how fragile our planet is and, more importantly, how inter- dependent all of its various systems are. We have learned
that we cannot continually pollute our environment and that our natural resources are limited and, in most cases, nonrenewable. Furthermore, we are coming to realize how central geology is to our everyday lives. For these and other reasons, geology is one of the most important college or university courses a student can take. <...>

Physical geology. Exploring the Eatrh / Общая геология. Исследуя Землю

Earth is a dynamic planet that has changed continuously during its 4.6 billion years of existence. The size, shape, and geographic distribution of the continents and ocean basins have changed through time, as have the atmosphere and biota. As scientists and concerned citizens, we have become increasingly aware of how fragile our planet is and, more importantly, how interdependent all of its various systems and subsystems are. We have also learned that we cannot continually pollute our environment and that our natural resources are limited and, in most cases, nonrenewable.

Physical geology. Laboratory manual / Общая геология. Пособие по лабораторным занятиям

In the example above, an observation is made and a hypothesis formulated. A hypothesis is an educated guess. Experiments are performed to prove or disprove your hypothesis. This sort of deductive reasoning is the same thought process used by detectives to solve crimes. You may consider the mineral identification experiments as simple, but there is no written rule that experiments must be complicated.
If an experiment is repeated time and time again and the conclusions are exactly the same, then the conclusion is elevated to a theory. Scientists define theory as a proven conclusion, something over which there is very little doubt. Notice that the way scientists use the word theory is much different from our everyday use. In our everyday usage, theory is equivalent to a scientist’s hypothesis—an estimation or guess. Sherlock Holmes’ theory of the murder was Colonel Mustard with the candlestick. This is Holmes’ guess or hypothesis of the crime; now he must gather evidence to prove it. <...>

Physical hydrology / Физическая гидрология

The goal of Physical Hydrology is to develop an understanding of the conceptual basis of the science of hydrology and to introduce the quantitative relations that implement that understanding in addressing scientific and water-resources-management questions. Previous editions apparently fulfilled a need for a comprehensive text in hydrology for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, and I have been pleased with its reception by colleagues and students.

Physical processes of sedimentation / Физические процессы при седиментации

Nearly everyone, at some time in his or her life, will have stood on a  sea beach and watched how the waves repeatedly disturb and then deposit the sand grains, whilst the wind, blowing freely over the drier parts of the beach, gathers up some of the sand and sweeps it inland to form tall dunes.

This particular case, one from common experience, serves very well to introduce the general topic of this book, namely, the dynamic interactions, in natural surroundings, between detrital particles and moving fluids. These interactions, in which physical processes are of paramount importance, give us the depositional landscapes and seascapes with which we are familiar today and, at various removes in time, many of the sedimentary strata found in the earth's crust <...>

Physical properties of crystals. Their representation by tensors and matrices / Физические свойства кристаллов. Их представление с помощью тензоров и матриц

Tne physical properties of crystals are defined by relations between measurable quantities. Density, for example, is defined from a relation between mass and volume. Now both mass and volume may be measured without reference to direction, and, accordingly, density is a property that does not depend on direction. On the other hand, a crystal property such as electrical conductivity is defined as a relation between two measurable quantities (the electric field and the current density) both of which have to be specified in direction as well as in magnitude.

Physical properties of rocks fundamentals and principles of petrophysics / Физические свойства горных пород основы петрофизики

Petrophysics, beginning with Archie’s historical yet evergreen equations, has a key function in all applications of geosciences, petroleum engineering and related technologies. It helps us to understand the processes and controlling properties and creates relationships between parameters we can measure as output of the dramatic progress in exploration techniques and properties we need for reservoir characterization (hydrocarbons, water, minerals, geothermal energy), exploration of natural resources, geotechnical constructions and environmental protection.

Physicochemical basis of the analysis of the paragenesis of minerals / Физико-химические основы анализа парагенезисов минералов

An intimate coexistence of minerals in close contact with one another, observed repeatedly in definite geologic settings, is called their paragenesis. The paragenesis of minerals may result from different causes. Usually by paragenesis is meant an association of minerals formed simultaneously as products of a certain stage of a given process. Such, for instance, is the paragenesis of minerals formed at the same time by a metamor-phic process and existing in close contact with one another. In this book we have in mind precisely this kind of paragenesis of simultaneously formed minerals. Some authors use the term paragenesis to designate an association of noncontemporaneous minerals, provided there is regularity in their occurrence together. Such, for example, is the paragenesis of primary minerals with the products of their decomposition, or the paragenesis of minerals which crystallize in a regular sequence from a cooling magma or a hydrothermal solution, forming overgrowths on one another. The term paragenesis will not be used here in this broader sense. <...>
