Sedimentología. Del proceso físico a la cuenca sedimentaria /

Sedimentology /

The Association exists to promote the study of sedi-mentology and the interchange of research, particularly where international cooperation is desirable. Members of the Association receive the journal Sedimentology and news circulars and are entitled to a reduction of fees at meetings sponsored by the Association. Members are also entitled to a reduction of costs of the Special Publications of the Association.

Sedimentology /

Sedimentology, which deals with the geology of sedimentary deposits, has become an actively studied discipline parallel to the development of academic and industrial drilling programs, research on plate tectonic concepts and environmental considerations. Continuous series such as those provided by the Deep Sea Drilling Project or the Ocean Drilling Program constitute outstanding archives to reconstruct environmental conditions governing past seas and adjacent landmasses.

Sedimentology and ore genesis /

Historically, the relation between sedimentology and the field of ore genesis has been a function of prevailing patterns of thought. Table I offers a brief schematic summary of the trend of thought patterns since Albertus Magnus.
Whenever the trend was to search for causes from within, the interest in the wall rock and its genesis was great. When causes from without appealed more to the scientists, the rocks enclosing ore deposits, and especially the sediments received little attention.

Sedimentology and sedimentary basins: from turbulence to tectonics /

The noun sediment comes to the English language from the Latin root sedimentum, meaning settling or sinking down, aform ofthe verb sedere,to sit orsettle. In earth and environmental sciences, sediment has a wide context that includes many forms of organic and mineral matter. In Part 1 we look more deeply at the origins of the sediment that occurs on and under the surface of the solid planets and which may be used to infer past environmental conditions and changes. Sediment accumulations may be grandly viewed as the great stratal archive of past surface environments, or more basically as‘dirt’. There has been sediment on the surface of the Earth since the Archaean, with the oldest known sediment grains dating from at least 4.4Ga (Part 1 Fig. 1). Sediment also mantles the surface of many other planets and their satellites, notably Mars, Venus and Saturn’s moon, Titan. <...>

Sedimentology and stratigraphy /

Sedimentology is the study of the processes of formation, transport and deposition of material that accumulates as sediment in continental and marine environments and eventually forms sedimentary rocks. Stratigraphy is the study of rocks to determine the order and timing of events in Earth history: it provides the time frame that allows us to interpret sedimentary rocks in terms of dynamic evolving environments. The stratigraphic record of sedimentary rocks is the fundamental database for understanding the evolution of life, plate tectonics through time and global climate change.

Sedimentology of gravels and congomerates /

The theme of this Memoir originated with the 11th Congress of the International Association of Sedimentologists held at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada during August 1982. It was in March 1979 that a University of Saskatchewan colleague, Hugh E. Hendry and myself proposed to the Congress Organizing Committee that a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on conglomeratic sediments was timely. This proposal materialised into a 12-day symposium, chaired by the present co-editors, of 29 oral papers with published abstracts — 14 of which became material for this Memoir.

Sedimentology. Recent developments and applied aspects /

A major and acknowledged role in the advance o f sedimentological knowledge is played by the methods of physics as expressed through fluid mechanics and loose-boundary  hydraulics. Turbulence is increasingly being seen as involving orderly flow structures, and these are significant for the origin of several sedimentary structures and for suspension transport. Recent advances in sediment-transport theory are rooted in the concept of the sediment load as a downward-acting force and in the notion of the flow as a transporting machine.

Sediments of the Western Guiana shelf. Reports of the Orinoco shelf expedition. Vol II /

The examination into the sediments of the Western Guiana shelf, the results. of which are recorded in the present report forms part of the study of the continental shelf deposits off the Orinoco delta. The initiative to this investigation was taken by Prof. Dr Ph. H. KUENEN, Director of the Institute of Marine Geology of Groningen University (Holland); the ‘“‘Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij N.V.” of The Hague, by their support, have rendered the necessary expeditions possible. The area of investigation, lying off the Orinoco delta in the N.E. of South America, extends from the Venezuelan Testigos Islands in the N.W. to the shelf area off the Essequibo river mouth in British Guiana in the S.E., from nearshore up to the region of the shelf edge (Fig. 1). <...>

Sediments, diagenesis and sedimentary rocks /

Geochemistry has deep roots. Its beginnings can be traced back to antiquity, but many of the discoveries that are basic to the science were made between 1800 and 1910. The periodic table of elements was assembled, radioactivity was discovered, and the thermodynamics of heterogeneous systems was developed. The solar spectrum was used to determine the composition of the Sun. This information, together with chemical analyses of meteorites, provided an entry to a larger view of the universe.
