Справочник посвящен систематизации и анализу терминов и понятий, относящихся к мерзлотным явлениям и процессам, которые развиваются в районах распространения многолетней и сезонной мерзлоты (криолитозоны) на равнинах Севера и в горах. В книге приводятся определения более 700 терминов и понятий, даются их различные толкования со ссылками на авторов, приводятся фамилии исследователей, впервые употребивших тот или иной термин. Для каждого термина и понятия даны синонимы на русском языке и их эквиваленты на английском языке. Справочник богато иллюстрирован схемами, рисунками и фотографиями, в том числе цветными, которые даны на вкладках. В конце справочника помещены список литературы, предметный (на русском и английском языках) указатель.

Рассчитан на широкий круг специалистов, работающих на Севере и в горах, в том числе географов и геологов, мерзлотоведов, геоморфологов, а также студентов и преподавателей соответствующих специальностей. 

The Glossary of Permafrost Science and Engineering is a wholesale revision of the Glossary of Permafrost and Related Ground-Ice Terms (Harris et al., 1988) and the International Permafrost Association’s Multilanguage Glossary of Permafrost and Related Ground-Ice Terms (van Everdingen, 2005). The new title was chosen to better identify its content and to reflect the extent of the revisions.

Over the years, NGWA Press, the official text publishing imprint of the National Ground Water Association, has produced a number of texts with glossaries. For the first time, we have gathered all of these various glossaries into a single source, and for many of the terms we have added illustrations and photographs. The individuals named as contributing to this compilation have all contributed over the years to NGWA Press titles that have featured glossaries.

This glossary has been prepared, under the authority of the Mining and Quarrying Requisites Industry Standards Committee, in order to standardize and to co-ordinate the technical terms in current use in mining in the United Kingdom. Although the majority of the terms defined in the original edition of this glossary were primarily concerned with coalmining, account has been taken of terms used in other forms of mining and of quarrying. The need for this glossary arose from the widely varying interpretation of terms used within the industry, and the prevalent use of more than one synonym, some purely local in origin, to indicate specific meanings. <...>

I have been teaching Structural Geology and Tectonics for the past four decades and during this period, I always felt a need for a glossary or definitional dictionary devoted to this branch. I therefory, made an attempt in this direction. The editor for while doing the groundwork of the book made use of Glossary of Geology edited by R. Bates & J. Jackson (Am. Geo!. Inst., 1980); Glossary of Geology in Hindi edited by myself (CSTT Govt. of India 1996); Introduction to the structure of the earth by E. Spencer; Tectonic Geology by myself (2006); Geology: an Introduction by myself (2004).

All terms listed in this Glossary have appeared in English-language publications or other writings in English and generally reflect NorthAmerican usage, unless otherwise noted. Many obsolete terms have been retained, as they remain valuable to readers using the older literature. Besides giving the current or preferred meaning of a term, some definitions include information on original usage or historical development
