The percentage composition of the subject matter of this revised edition is approximately the same as that for the first, but the number of chapters has increased significantly. This necessitated the publication of a companion volume. In addition to dealing with various geophysical exploration methods, it adds and emphasizes the use of radiometric methods to explore for hard minerals found in sediments on and beneath the ocean floor.

Hydrogeology is now considered to be a core course in the curriculum of undergraduate geology programs as well as many fields of engineering. There is ongoing de- ; mand for persons with training in hydrogeology by consulting organizations, state and federal regulatory agencies, and industrial firms. Most of the employment in hydrogeology is in the environmental area. This is a book that will help prepare students for either a career in hydrogeology or in other areas of environmental science and engineering where a strong background in hydrogeology is needed.

This book is dedicated to practising engineers working in rock engineering practice, as well as for graduate students studying and doing research on rock mechanics and rock engineering. The aim of this book is to make the engineers and the students understand how to apply the theory of rock mechanics to engineering practice, in order to achieve the rational design and construction of rock structures such as tunnels, underground caverns, and slopes, and to assess not only the stability of them during/after construction, but also to ensure the safety of the workers.

My first experience in applying borehole geophysics to the environmental field was in 1960 at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL); however, I started working with geophysical logs in 1953. In Idaho we were able to map a complex aquifer system and the distribution of plumes of waste from injection wells and ponds. One of the earliest applications of neutron moisture logs to locate waste migrating above the water table and of gamma-spectral logs to identify migrating radioisotopes was at the INEL. While at the INEL I was involved in the recovery operations and investigations at the SL-1 reactor.

It is now 25 years since, along with Francis Hein as a co-author, we published Deep Marine Environments: Clastic Sedimentation and Tectonics with Unwin-Hyman (Pickering et al. 1989). During this time, there have been enormous advances in our understanding of modern and ancient deep-water environments, the physical processes that operate and the resulting deposits. Technology has allowed a much greater interrogation of deep-water environments, for example through improvements in the use of side-scan sonar, the acquisition and processing of seismic-reflection data, together with considerable advances in both industrial and academic deep-water drilling. Experimental, theoretical and observational studies have led to a significantly improved understanding of the fluid dynamics and depositional processes in deep-water settings.
