Rio Tinto today announces initial reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves for seven lithium assets acquired as part of the purchase of Arcadium Lithium, namely:

• Four lithium brines deposits: the Fenix and Olaroz operations, and the Sal de Vida and Cauchari projects in Argentina

• Three hard rock spodumene deposits: the Whabouchi and Galaxy projects in Northern Quebec, and the Mt Cattlin operation in Western Australia

Fluids rich in water, carbon and sulfur species and a variety of dissolved salts are a ubiquitous transport medium for heat and matter in the Earth’s interior. Fluid transport through the upper mantle and crust controls the origin of magmatism above subduction zones and results in natural risks of explosive volcanism. Fluids passing through rocks affect the chemical and heat budget of the global oceans, and can be utilized as a source of geothermal energy on land.

Beginning in the 18th century, the Alps were the first mountain belt in thehistory of European science to attract the interest of Naturalists. In consequence, many key geological principles were developed as a result of the progress of geological exploration in the Alps and, simultaneously, in the oceans. Within mountain belts, deep sea or pelagic sediments were first discovered before being clearly recognized as such.

Many important decisions, ranging from locating an oil prospect or a land-fill site to determining the location and size of an earthquake-producing fault, are based on geological maps. Because a map-scale structure is never completely sampled in three dimensions, geological maps and the cross sections derived from maps are always interpretations. The interpretation may be complicated by direct structural observations, like bedding attitudes, that are misleading because they represent a local structure, not the map-scale structure.

In the past decade, 3-D reflection seismology has almost entirely replaced 2-D seismology in the seismic industry. Recording 3-D surveys has become the norm, instead of the exception. The application of 2-D seismology is mostly limited to reconnaissance surveys, or to where recording 3-D data is still prohibitively expensive, such as in rough mountains and wild forests. However, academic research and teaching have struggled to keep up with the 3-D revolution. As a consequence of this tardiness, there are no books available that introduce the theory of seismic imaging from the 3-D perspective.

Metals are important for the normal development of organisms but they need to be in there allowed limits but if they exceed their limits, they become toxic for organisms as they are non-biodegradable and it continues in the environment and bioaccumulates in the organisms. Metals enter in the sediment through natural and anthropogenic activities.

The mining industry is in a state of flux, and while some may say this has been the norm for many centuries, even the most cursory examination will reveal that the storm waves are real and the need for change within some areas is long overdue. Indeed, the industry is currently facing some serious challenges, including regulatory interference, social isolation, and/or untenable commercial purgatory. However, it warrants recognition that the current waves of opposition ultimately may be only temporary. The industry—and indeed humanity in general—has always adapted to and overcome the challenges of a particular moment, whether measured in the evolution from pig iron to mini-mills or handcarts to electrically driven autonomous haulage.
